THE MAIN MONSTER BIZZNESS
Weiss has over thirty years of acting experience under his belt and gained early notoriety in his career for his role as Cropsey, a member of the Rogues gang headed by Luther (David Patrick Kelly) in Walter Hill’s now-legendary cult film THE WARRIORS. Around that time, Weiss had a lead role in an Off-Broadway play written by Street called “Alive at the Factory”. He has since gone on to appear in BREWSTER’S MILLIONS, ANOTHER 48 HOURS, FART: THE MOVIE, EDDIE PRESSLEY, THE METEOR MAN, CONGO, and VICE GIRLS. He can be seen on an upcoming episode of the hit Showtime original series DEXTER.
I caught up with both Joel Weiss and Dave Street at a preproduction meeting they had together before the opening of the Chiller Theatre Horror Convention at the Hilton Hotel in Parsippany, New Jersey in May 2008. Street was anxious to discuss his latest project with me, and told me that after being out of touch with Joel for a quarter century, they reconnected at the Chiller convention in 2007 where he got the idea for MONSTER BIZZNESS, which takes place between a horror convention and an alternate universe inhabited by monsters who want to be treated with respect. The story began as a short novel, and then blossomed into a screenplay. Street promises that the film will be both humorous and gory, which is what fans cannot seem to get enough of. Essentially it’s about a certain group of monsters that seek vengeance on a certain kind of human filth, specifically humans who are in positions of professional authority who abuse their power and egregiously mistreat their subordinates.
The conversation got around to the discussion of potential directors, and Street would love to have Rob Zombie helm the feature. I suggested Kevin Smith given the film’s convention milieu. Street also mentioned that he has recently met a few young directors who have expressed an interest in the project and that he’s keeping an open. So far there are a handful of really good parts in it: three monsters and three humans, including one human monster. Street is fine-tuning the script. Joel is also one of the associate producers. The next stage is raising the capital for the film. If anyone is interested in a great horrifying investment, they can contact Street at the film’s MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/monsterbizzness.
