RIP: STAN WINSTON

Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning legendary special effects guru, passed away Sunday evening after a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma, the same disease that claimed the life of actor Roy Scheider in February. Winston was 62. This is very sad news, indeed. Winston was a guest at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in June 2007 in New Jersey and I personally saw no sign that he was ill.

Winston began his career as a make-up effects man with the 1972 TV-movie GARGOYLES. He continued with work on THE BAT PEOPLE, ROOTS, THE TWO WORLDS OF JENNIE LOGAN, THE THING, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, JURASSIC PARK, and PEARL HARBOR, to name a few.

Winston was a fountain of knowledge and experience, and his contemporaries marveled at his ability to see every perceived problem as an opportunity. His death is an enormous loss to the film world and will have a ripple effect for years to come.
