JOHN'S IS A 'PSCYHOPATH!' CARPENTER PLANNING YET ANOTHER PROJECT!
Last week, we told you about a new John Carpenter film, THE 13TH APOSTLE, his first in four years. This in addition to the episode of the MASTERS OF HORROR series he's helming. And now on top of all of this, we're hearing that Carpenter has just signed onto direct PSYCHOPATH. In fact, he's directing two different projects called PSYCHOPATH. Allow me to explain.
This week, everyone is falling over themselves with E3, the electronics show in which Microsoft and Sony drop their pants to show whose is bigger for next gen consoles. Nintendo meanwhile refuses to acknowledge any sort of genitalia in their more kid-friendly games. Hence, a lot of news involving the world of video games is coming through the pipelines. What we are seeing a lot of these days, what with the next gen consoles and with higher powered PCs invading the market, is more of a marriage between film and video games.
To that end is Titan Productions, which once boasted John Woo amongst its founders. They are prepping several games right now. I don't know if PSYCHOPATH started as a game or as a movie, but it looks like it will invade both mediums. John Carpenter will direct the film PSYCHOPATH, a real movie with no clicking involved for the Hollywood big screen. At the same time, Titan will be prepping the game which Carpenter will also work on. Carpenter will direct the cinematic portions of the game and will also oversee the development of the project, thus assuring that it's going to be something he's happy to have his name on.
As for the film itself, frustratingly little is known. It involves an ex-CIA operative on the trail of a serial killer. As he gets closer and closer to his prey, he starts to go a bit bonkers himself. Right now, it sounds a lot like the excellent MANHUNTER (not RED DRAGON - Boo! Hiss!). Of course, we expect juicier details once Carpenter finishes writing the script with Todd Farmer (JASON X).
This is not the only film-game tie-in Titan is producing for horror fans. Clive Barker is also getting into the ring with DEMONIK. Not much is known about that project either, save that it creates a new supervillain, one that gamers will likely be able to inhabit in the game version. Barker is working on the script now and will oversee the game and film projects. No news on if he is actually directing either.
Right now, we know more about Carpenter's schedule than Barker's. Wow, four years without a peep. Suddenly, John Carpenter emerges with two film projects, a television ep and a video game. Get to work, John. Show these hacks how it's done!
