Well, someone's been working for Pazuzu. One of the most interesting projects this year has been EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING. The production is being directed by Paul Schrader, who took over when John Frankenheimer passed away. Speculation is high whether it is a return to the greatness of the original or whether it's a tired rehash of EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC.
In the last few days, it has gotten positively ugly. <prgam Creek, who is producing the project have seen Schrafder's final cut... and they're furious. Why they're furious all depends on who you listen to. An article in really got the controversy rolling, as Schrader has painted a very unsightly picture.
According to the article, Schrader has made a film that is an intimate exploration of the nature of faith (horry! That's what we're looking for!), but Morgan Creek was furious that there just wasn't much horror in this horror film. Where was the vomit spewing, the crucifix porking, and would it have killed you to write in a music video sequence so we could get Korn on the soundtrack? Well, that's an exaggeration, but MC does come out looking pretty foolish in the article. It even states that the suits shelled out big bucks for the script, and then NEVER BOTHERED TO READ IT!!!
"Schrader and the studio are now at loggerheads. They can't sack him, and he won't resign," the article says. " The option of hauling cast and crew back together for reshoots in its Moroccan location is financially insane. But Morgan Creek are loathe to give Schrader post-production money to finish his film. It seems a classic Hollywood case of greed versus integrity, of money men not realising they're paying for art till it's too late."
Schrader has never made big, explosive films. His most notable supernatural project has been the understated (not to mention underrated) 1982 remake of CAT PEOPLE. He has also directed AUTO FOCUS, LIGHT SLEEPER and HARDCORE. No slouch in the screenwriting department either. This is the guy who penned TAXI DRIVER, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and RAGING BULL to name a few. As he told , "You really have to stay away from all the things that people identify with the Friedkin film... turning heads and projectile vomit... the girl on the bed and the throwing of holy water."
The article goes on to state the original intent - "It's the film that seriously makes the closest attempt to get back to elements that made the first one so great," co-star Gabriel Mann claimed, before his bosses' own crisis of faith. "(It has) a kind of creeping, growing eeriness that permeates inside you until you realise you're really scared and freaked out."
I highly suggest everyone read the full article in . It's an absolutely fascinating piece.
EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING was originally slated for August 2003, but is now tentatively scheduled for a February 2004 release.
