The Wicker man does have a good ending, its quite harrowing.I like the murders in Nightmares In A Damaged Brain an all SUPREME but for cheap yank slasher gore deaths Night Of The Demon is the most gruelling to watch, it has about 19 kills one more nasty than the last - the Biker getting his dick ripped off, the bizarre man being lashed with own intestines and the most difficult to stomach is when the Bigfoot forces those girl scouts to stab each other to death, sickening stuff!

I have two for you:

Paul Ruebens in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. "Ooo...ahh...uhh..." Funniest and most sarcastic death ever.

The death of Private Mellish(Adam Goldberg)in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It seemed so personal and poignant, the slow over-powering, the knife sliding into him...horrific and well acted.

The protracted knifing in SPR was indeed horrific, and would have boosted the UK certificate to 18 had not been made by Spielberg.

I'm assuming the "UK certificate" is your rating system? Is it as flawed as the one in the US?

There are noteable inconsistencies, particularly when it comes to certification of films by blockbuster directors like SS - RYAN was awarded just a '15' certificate, and his JURASSIC PARK scared the shit out of many children.

The British Board of Film Classifiers/Censors (BBFC) are still harsh on sexy and violent indie productions, but they are not quite as draconian as they used to be.

Dagon where Ezequiel (Francisco Rabal) has his skin removed from his head while he is still kicking. That was disturbing, although perhaps derivative of the original Texas Chainsaw massacre.

I like that film - big hairy beasts wreaking havoc in the woods is a good sub-genre, and imagining such a hand reaching out for your exposed penis is quite disturbing.

So I keep telling my wife, but she doesn't listen.

The "backwoods slasher" sub-genre is so odd, I can't think of that many but Night Of The Demon stands tall in my memory so it must be one of the better ones.

Fulci and Argento films probably have the best death scenes, after the Zombie Flesh Eaters eyball scene and Suspirias opening double murder its quite difficult to pick one better than another! The bullet through the spyhole in Opera is a visual tour de force I suppose.

WRONG TURN and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES (if you really have to), but far better is the recently re-released JUST BEFORE DAWN and, better still, RITUALS (1977).

"Professor! Can't you examine my brain without removing it?"

"Yes, easily."
