***UPDATED*** The Truth About CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST - Sorry Region 1

A while ago, we reported on a brand new Special Edition CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST disc that would make any horror fan drool with anticipation. You can still find that story .

The disc includes a widescreen transfer supervised by Ruggero Deodato, a Deodato commentary track with critics Giona Nazzaro and Antonio Tentori and an hour long documentry called INTO THE JUNGLE: THE MAKING OF CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST.

Still, we heard no news in the press release about any regional coding and several sites were unsure. Now it's come out. The disc is an Italian release. It will be released on June 15th, PAL Region 2, which should make our European readers extremely happy. You can see a rundown of the disc on this . It still leaves North America in the dark, so hold onto that EI disc.

And if anyone from Grindhouse is reading this, none of us care how few people your operation has. Get off your asses and release this or sell the materials to someone who will.

Any word on whether the extras have English subs? Because if they do then I'm all over this.

No word yet on the language option, chuk, and you're not the first to bring it up either. A lot of our European readers and some of the lucky American bastards who can actually afford multi-region players (not that I'm jealous or anything ) have expressed an interest. My advice would be to keep an eye on Luminous (preferred for detailed info) and Diabolik DVD for more details.

What the hell are you talking about? I have bought 2 all-region players ( one at Circuit City and one at BB) and they were both around 60 bucks. One was an Apex ( I gave it to a friend) and the other which I use now as my main player is the Cyber Home 500.

I would sugest to anyone who wants to go region free ( and you're crazy not to!) go spend some time here and you can do it with out spending a ton of dough!

Okay okay, I guess in hindsight, my argument didn't hold much water. I should have said "bastards who aren't as lazy as I am" or something.

In truth though, I was concerned not only about regional coding but about getting a player that would go from NTSC to PAL with minimal difficulty. This includes problems in the picture when dealing with aspect ratios as I've heard several models squeeze the picture. I know those Malata players they've been pushing at Luminous solve that problem and those are the models I've had my eye on, since I've heard they are the best.

The Malata players are very nice from what I hear. But they are a bit pricey. Don't do bussiness with Luminous unless you like to be dicked around and wait months for your purchace to arrive. It's a one man bussiness and not very well run from what I've gathered. I use xploited cinema and the customer service is top notch. They go so far as to put a single piece of styrofoam in a keep case to keep the dvd from coming off the holder during shipping! ( many import discs don't come shrink wrapped). Got my discs to me in about 5 days on average.

The cyberhome 500 does all that pal/ntsc converting stuff automaticly for the most parts. It will also play mp3s and even jpeg files. It's also progressive scan. Basicly it will do everything the Malata will at about 1/4th the price! If you find one of these grab it because they are golden. I wish I had bought 2 to have a spare!

Seriously though, spend some time over at nerdout. You can find out what players do what exactly. It's a wealth of information on cool/cheap players and how to hack 'em.

Oh yeah, I agree that the APEX players play just about anything you throw in them (including burnt toast) but you suffer from a shitty picture quality. I know, I had one myself.

I bought a JATON player (around $300 at the time) after a recommendation from AZNFILMS.COM or HKFLIX.COM (I don't remember which). And I'm quite happy with it. It's progressive scan, DTS compliant, "ALL" region, auto PAL/NTSC conversion, and designed to have it's BIOS upgraded regularly. The only complaints I would say that I have is that the console itself is ugly to look at (a big black rectangle) and the DVD layer switch pauses just a tad longer than my standard R1 TOSHIBA player.

But after getting the chance to buy and watch such PAL gems as the ICHI THE KILLER uncut "Special Edition", 28 DAYS LATER, DOBERMANN, DEAD OR ALIVE, the BATTLE ROYALE "Director's Cut" limited edition metal tin, and JUNK. So, in my opinion, it's paid for itself, no questions asked.
