Hello, everyone! I've been away due to ill-health~my own and my PC's (mainly the Net connection). I've really missed being able to get to favorite sites, including this one. Let's see what films I have listed from fairly recently:
The Leopard Man ~ I'm watching it right now on TCM. I've long ago passed the century mark for watching most of the major Val Lewton movies. Earlier tonight, I watched... Cat People ~ Every time I see it, I'm amazed by this seemingly simple little film that is so elegant. This was preceded by.... I Walked with a Zombie ~ Yes, I'm on a Lewton kick. I even caught the Martin Scorsese special again: Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows. Others I've seen in the past day or so are: Mad Love (1935), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Strait-Jacket, Mr. Sardonicus, Vampire Circus, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Revenge of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Created Woman, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed, Curse of the Demon, White Zombie, The Other (1972), Dead of Night (1945), The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (2010), The She-Creature (1958), Staunton Hill (BLECH!!!!!), Legion (ditto), The Return of the Vampire and Count Yorga, Vampire. Actually, that's just brushing the surface! Yes, I do have insomnia. Definitely, I watch too much TV!

Freaks (1932)
The Mad Magician (1954) House of Wax (1953) House on Haunted Hill (1959) The Haunting (1963) ~ It's on right now. Do I ever love this movie! I'm sure that I passed the "century mark" long ago and must be on my way to 200 viewings. I absolutely never tire of it, not one second, not one frame.

Poltergeist ~ Surprisingly, I haven't watched this for a long time yet remembered every moment of it! It's one of those I've long ago lost count of the number of times I've viewed it. I'm certain that I saw it at least five times at a couple of theaters. Once it showed up on cable movie channels... It definitely holds up, and I still have to look away when he tears his face off.
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) ~ It's on right now, after which they will be showing a film I have never heard of and plan to tape~just in case: A Quiet Place in the Country (1969) starring Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave. This could be verrrry interesting, as the two certainly fell for each other while filming Camelot (1967).

MM, did you see this movie "Vampyre" (1933)? If not, then I'll try my best to rent it.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch it this time around, but I have seen Vampyr and would highly recommend it, especially for fans of atmospheric horror. Much of it is eerily beautiful, so artfully done. Before TCM began airing it occasionally, I had only read about it and seen a few pictures in some of my hardback volumes. I wondered if it would live up to my expectations, which it did. I am peeved with myself for not taping it this time around. I keep trying to cut back on taping so much, especially now that I have to sacrifice other things for tape space. Vampyr would be worth it.
When I watch Val Lewton's productions and these early movies, it makes me miss the care that seemed to go into them. Nowadays, films with night scenes or even simply indoor scenes are so murky/dark that most of what is happening can only be guessed at from any sounds or dialogue. They call it realism, but, as one reviewer said, when have movies ever been about realism? It's not just horror at fault either. I've lost count of the films that I stayed with but couldn't figure out what happened and those I simply gave up on. Woah! Was that off-topic?! Others I've watched in the meantime include: A Quiet Place in the Country ~ One of those that make you wonder if there is or isn't a ghost, or if the guy is just descending rapidly into madness. This one I taped, as I had never heard of it and thought it might not show up again for a long time. Tenderness~ more of a suspense/thriller movie, starring a very low-key Russell Crowe Shutter Island ~ I admit to being sooooo disappointed in this one since I'd heard some praise for it though no details of what it was about. I didn't even read anything at IMDb so that I could be surprised. I was hoping that what I thought in the opening wasn't going to be true, but sadly it was. *sigh*

Zombie Town
Killer Slug zombies that die when you feed them salt. Was a new twist on a zombie movie and wasn't two bad for what was a slightly low budget film. I would rather watch the Return of the Living dead series though. The Alligator People This was an old B&W classic but it wasn't to horrible had an interesting ending. |

After Midnight (1989) ~ I hadn't seen this since it aired on a movie channel, whether HBO or Showtime I can't recall. I think it holds up quite well and is a much better portmanteau/anthology movie than I've seen for a very long time. It was kind of a kick seeing Marg Helgenberger and Alan Rosenberg in the same segment, as they married in 1989. I haven't seen Ramy Zada in anything for many years, so I must be watching the wrong programming since he IS working. I still have his series Dark Justice on tape, including the switchover to Bruce Abbott as the vigilante judge.
Masters of Horror, "Imprint" ~ I have to admit that I was extremely disappointed after finally catching this one, as I had heard a lot of praise for it. Remove the very intentional grossouts, and it's hot all that horrifying. Face it: If that hand creature showed up in most films, it would be slammed by viewers. I'm not saying that it was a bad episode, especially not with Billy Drago, who's long been one of my favorite character actors; it simply isn't the episode I expected. I'm in the "Torture is not horror" camp, for one thing. Sightings: Heartland Ghost ~ This might be one of the few movies in which someone is reincarnated looking extremely little like the person in the past. Unfortunately, most stories about reincarnation have them looking identical to the prior incarnation, occasionally with roles swapped (male/female) but always with that uncanny resemblance. This especially is common in vampire movies in which he discovers his lost love in a new form. Well, in this cable movie, they broke away from that, managing at least one big surprise.

`Rise Of The Gargoyles`........definately needed more creature in the feature.
`The Abominable Dr Phibes`.........didn`t get it. Too surreal for me. `Wishmaster`.........This I loved. Divoff`s performance as the wickedly evil Djinn was mesmerising. Fun movie. |
