The more I read these posts, the more I realize that I've barely scratched the surface with movie-watching! I suppose if I could go to video stores, I'd be overwhelmed, uncertain where to start. I suppose I'd do like in the days of VHS: start checking the corners and bottom shelves for those strays that seem to be overlooked.
I seem to be short on seeing horror-related movies. I rely on my movie channels, and they haven't offered much in the way of horror. Today, I watched two: The Order (2003) ~ I keep trying to like this one. Maybe I need to see it when I'm in the right frame of mind. I do think they should have gone with the alternate title, The Sin Eater, which would make it stand out a bit more. The movie reunites Heath Ledger, Mark Addy and Shannyn Sossamon from A Knight's Tale. For some reason, I keep expecting Addy to start clowning, not that he plays it straight every moment. There are some interesting images, but nothing really stands out to me. Beneath Still Waters (2006) ~ I just watched this on the Sci Fi Channel after pasisng it by a number of times before. Actually, it's much better than I expected, and I really would like to see the intact version someday though it's not likely. From now on, when it's aired, I'll probably tune in. That's it for now! I must say that the previous posts give me titles to research. At least I can read about them!

Woodenheart: You are right about the "guess" thread! It gives us the chance to share favorites and, especially, rarities. Even a single picture really can stir up interest. I'm hoping to see more participation there because that increases the number of films for us to discover/share. Thanks to John for alerting me to The Shout, a film I had not encountered before, not in all of my research! Considering that it stars Alan Bates and John Hurt, I'm surprised it hasn't received more attention.
So, how was Otto? I haven't found out much about it, as I planned to at least read a bit of summary and perhaps any reviews I could find. It's one of many I doubt I'll ever see, but I can learn about it. I dropped by here for an alert of two movies that will be shown in the wee hours of Saturday morning, April 3: Burnt Offerings (1976) at 2 a.m. Central in letterbox format The House Where Evil Dwells (1982) at 4 a.m. Central in letterbox format The second one is quite obscure and bears a strong resemblance to Ju-on/The Grudge. IMDb synopsis: An American family moves into a haunted house in Japan. Cast: Edward Albert, Susan George, Doug McClure. There are crabs speaking in Japanese, as well as the ghosts of a samurai, his wife and her lover! For tonight, it seems that no one will be airing anything of the horrific sort, so I might resort to YouTube. Woodenheart (There doesn't seem to be a suitable nick name for you except perhaps Heart. Any suggestions?): I don't know what streaming movies is; is it just watching movies at places such as YouTube and IMDb? I don't know much about computer technology, and I'm rather a coward about trying sites for fear their dangerous to the PC or are illegal. It's hard to tell which ones are OK~at least to me. I've been on the Net a bit more than two years, but I feel like I'm still a toddler. If I don't have to download (right word?) anything, I'd be interested. I just have a laptop, and, from what I understand, they don't have much room for movies and such.

That should be "nickname", not "nick name", which sounds as if it belongs in a slasher movie! Oops!

I hate to triple post, but I just saw on the TV movie guide that TCM is airing The House Where Evil Dwells an hour earlier than what is on the schedule I received. Perhaps they didn't take into account the time change (Spring forward!). I wanted to drop by to report that Burnt Offerings will start at 1 a.m. Central, followed by the other at 3 a.m. Saturday. I don't know if anyone is watching for it, but better to triple post than to have someone miss it due to what I wrote.

Just call me wooden or WH, Both are fine. I love the two movies you mentioned above. You are always so nice to share your findings with us. Streaming a film is nice. You don't have to download it, you watch it on a site that hosts these flims. I guess if you put up a film that is still in the theaters isn't proper but I doubt if you'll get in trouble if you watch them for your not the one hosting it. To play it safe, here is nices site to view some already released films online. http://tvshack.net/ http://www.hulu.com/ I think these two sites are nice choices that you'd be comfortable with. Otto was good with over the top gore but I don't think you'd like it...or maybe I'm wrong. I am going just by reading your posts and the films you watch. It was a comedy of sorts with alot of zombie sex...lets just leave it at that. Well is saturday and it's raining so...horror movies will fill my house today. I will be back later to post my choices. |

I caught both movies that night and did sacrifice a tapeful of varied episodes to capture those letterboxed versions. I was surprised by The House Where Evil Dwells, as it was better than I remembered! I keep reading attacks on it at IMDb and wonder how they could have watched the same film I did! Maybe they don't allow for it being low-budget though the cast wasn't what one would expect from a B movie. Edward Albert looked so handsome and very fit! Actually, Doug McClure looked pretty doggone good. The sex scenes weren't at all like they tend to have now though Susan George has never been shy about doing nude scenes; it didn't have a tawdry feel to it, if that makes sense. The black crabs spouting Japanese were cooler and creepier than I remembered!
woodenhead: Yes, I imagine that I'd better not check out Otto if it's too rough. I'm not really a big fan of "zomboid" movies, what I call those creatures who do not resemble the zombies of folklore. Most zombies are more like ghouls actually, but no one ever dubs them that instead. Oh! It's far off, but Incubus (1965) with William Shatner will air during the wee hours of May 1! At one point, they thought this film was lost until coming across a copy of it. It's in the language of Esperanto, which gives it a really strange twist, along with how it is filmed. From IMDb: Kia is a succubus, luring to their final perdition men who already have sinful habits and libertine inclinations. She tires of this, as it's too easy, and these souls are going to Hell anyway. She wants to match wits and charm with someone who is good. So, against the advice of her sister Amael, Kia seeks out Marc, a man who has already faced death with courage. After a night together, Kia finds not only that Marc's goodness is still intact but also she has been ravaged by love. In anger, she and Amael conjure an incubus to deal with Marc. The incubus starts with Marc's sister, Arndis. Who will win the struggle for souls? I'm really excited about this rare film being shown and will be ready to tape it. From now on, I'm going to carefully study the monthly TCM schedule because I've already missed one goodie: The Shout! When John posted that picture on the guess thread then gave me all the necessary clues to find it, I thought, "How I'd love to see this movie!" Then, I spotted it on the TCM schedule for January! ARRRRRGH! I've learned my lesson. Thanks for the links, WH! I have heard about Hulu but haven't watched anything there yet. I hear that it has a lot of TV shows. At YouTube, I found several episodes of Boris Karloff's Thriller though not "A Wig for Miss Devore", which I remember as terrifying my sister and I as little girls; perhaps it wouldn't now, but I'd love to give it a chance, that and "Pigeons from Hell". YouTube also has episodes of Hammer House of Mystery & Suspense, Circle of Fear aka Darkroom, and other anthology series. If I decide to stay up late, I think I might resort to YouTube's many horror films, particularly vampire, including the Subspecies series. I need to watch more genre films~horror, of course, especially after watching the horrific Nia Vadalos film I Hate Valentine's Day~and I don't mean horrific in a good way! Blech! I need some scary images to replace her grinning visage! I tuned in only for John Corbett, but the poor man looked as if he was trapped and looking for a way out.

The Prophecy is a good one! In fact, I like the whole series to varying degrees. It did not seem to become to repetitive, and each has impressive scenes. I'd like to watch them from beginning to end someday, but I think I only have the first three taped.
What does my film journal list this time? Lost Souls (2000)~I still think the end is a huge cheat! I won't detail it here, as it's possible others haven't seen this End of Times film, one of many that were released in the 1999-2000 period as part of the furor over the new millennium (actually 2001, not 2000) and Y2K (the fear of what would happen when the calendar went from 1999 to 2000 ~ Remember that?!). The Gray Man (2007) ~ Patrick Bachau as Albert Fish, serial killer/cannibal of the Twenties whose victims were children // I liked that it wasn't presented in a sensationalistic fashion, rather almost like a documentary. It stayed rather creepy for what it did not show. The Rift aka Endless Descent (1990) ~ This was one of the many suboceanic sci fi/horror films that were released about the same time, including Leviathan and DeepStar Six. I enjoyed it much more than I expected to and do not seem to recall seeing it before. R. Lee Ermey and Jack Scalia do a very good job, particularly Ermey, whose military background really shows. Someone at IMDb alerted us that this would be shown again at 10 p.m. Saturday, April 24. I don't know what time zone, so I'll have to be on the lookout for it. Nora Roberts' Midnight Bayou (2009) ~ If this had had a better cast (Jerry O'Connell?! Ick!), it might have had a chance at being a more-worthwhile film. Actually, the parts that take place in the past are generally much better, with one very powerful scene. For Nora Roberts, it's not too bad~except for that oft-grinning O'Connell! Yuck!

Wow. I tried to watch Albert Fish: In Sin He Found Salvation and I couldn't. I turned it off. It made my stomach turn. I didn't know there was another film that told of this sick bastards life...I may look it up. |

WH: The Gray Man, at least as aired on Chiller Channel, does not appear to go into any details about his crimes beyond someone reading a letter. Still, it has a very eerie feeling throughout since we know the type of man he is. I was very impressed with the approach to this subject because it could have been made lurid. I know about having to switch off movies. For me, I've never been able to get more than a little into The Girl Next Door and An American Crime. I've decided that I can go without seeing these, both based on the Sylvia Likens case in Indiana.
I watched Inside (2006) awhile ago and was really surprised by how much I liked it and how much tension there is throughout. The weak link was Leighton Meester though, at IMDb, they were spilling praise on her but not much for the rest of the cast, opposite to my thoughts. People brought up Misery for comparison, but I thought of films such as Boxing Helena and even Crawlspace from waaaaay back though in the latter, the youth sort of fixates on the couple. Still, I thought it had enough originality to make me want to watch it again. The kooky mom put me in mind of Valerie Mahaffey; she has that same neurotic, thin, pale redhead look. Valerie was the popular choice for Maris Crane, if she ever was shown on Fraser, which she never was unfortunately. Now, I'm watching Driftwood (2006), which so far is so-so. It seems familiar, but I don't have a clear memory of watching it before. Can it be so bad it completely slipped my memory? I read at IMDb that it was shot in 15 days! That sounds like the days of Roger Corman and AIP.
