Default Why do you like Underground Horror Films..

I have decided to take the journey into Underground Horror because I am bored of the mainstream "scary film". Although they are very entertaining, I am now looking for something unique, challenging and visually stimulating. Now I am only a newbie in this genre but I think I have been guided in the right direction. I am totally in love with Nekromantik.. it blew me away, I craved more. Genesis , those who have seen it, I need not say more. I had a breif stop at Untold Story..brutal, interesting, and somewhat funny...worth a veiwing. My next adventures are going to take me places I long to be. Thank you my UG mentors for showing me that "horror films'' can be art and should be veiwed, felt and tasted ......by all my senses.

Why do you like underground horror?

It's like mainstream movies, some are natural, some are just out to shock.

Genesis and Scrapbook, for instance, are well put together, and have decent ideas, are natural.
Movies like August Underground and the Guinea Pigs, for instance, are more of a fashion statement. What I mean is, like Bumfights, people own them to shock everyone. Similar to Faces Of Death back in the day, they seem to be owned to make a name.
There's only so much blood, shit, vomit and shaking cameras you can see before you become desensitised.

I Spit On Your Corpse, I Piss On Your Grave, managed to balance the two. A little too arty, but had a decent idea, then shocked by shit eating.

I dunno, give me Jorg Buttgereit films any day.

Good question

With me it is seeing how far the genre can be pushed. It's the underground that will provide us with the next Romero, Raimi or Cronenberg. In a way NOTLD was the birth of the underground. It was a small independant movie which tore up the rule book & shocked audiences with it's graphic content. What I like with underground movies is directors that make something unique, startling, shocking. Horror is mean't to affect it's audience. The sanitised hollywood horrors don't do that anymore. I still like mainstream movies but the true works of daring are being made on shoestring budgets. For example the utter brutality of August Underground, it doesn't matter if you like thes films or not, they are well made by people that love what they do.
To me it's films like Aftermath, Cutting Moments & Irreversible that are the cream of the crop, the content in these movies is shocking & disturbing but they are rooted in the human condition. It's that addition of humanity that gives the movie it's ability to shock & stay with you

To put it simply, they are made with love and passion. They tend to hit an emotional area within me that mainstream movies seem to miss. Certain ones have a 80s feel to them that I love. To go down the AU road I love the brutality and the realness. Also these movies tend to be the ones with the well done gore and practical effects...I am so damned tired of CGI.

I could not agree with you more, all horror flicks today have hollywood makeovers, good special effects do not make a good movie, they dont even make the villain/s scarier (nightmare on elm street remake is a prime example). The movies that are made with time, effort, less money and therefore less publicity have a certain charm to them which captivates me in a way that mainstream horror doesnt. Not to say mainstream is always bad

I also agree. Main thing is also...you can make your movie any damned way you please instead of being under someones fucking thumb all the time and having to argue with them about how it's shot.

One of the best Horror Movie-makers I'd make an exception for on would be Dave Rock Nelson who made Devil Ant. Although there are a lot of problems with the film, Rocky Nelson has shown a distinct vision along with his recent film Into the Void and he has the potential for greatness, that's if the Rock doesn't wind up the view.
