Horror Express has learned that exploitation filmmaker Rene Cardona, Jr. passed away on February 5, 2003.
The son of a popular Mexican filmmaker, Cardona followed in his father?s footsteps. He began acting his father?s films, showing up in such notable films as SPIRITISM and quickly followed up as a writer, penning the cult classic, NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES. He began directing himself in 1963.
He was never praised much for his subtext or visual style, but created a number of classic horror and exploitation films that were heavy on shock value and entertainment. Some of his more notable achievements, including NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CATS, BEAKS: THE MOVIE, TINTORERRA: BLOODY WATERS and GUYANA: CRIME OF THE CENTURY, just to name a few. Cardona was the first to pioneer a number of popular sub-genres south of the border, and always added something to the tried and true genres he explored. Cardona delivered hours of entertainment throughout his career, which spanned over fifty years.
Just as Rene Cardona Sr. did fifteen years ago, Rene Cardona Jr. died in his native Mexico City of cancer. He was 63 years old.
R.I.P.
