Though it has been bandied around for months as the film crews up, Production Weekly has finally made it semi-official by announcing that shooting will begin on the STARSHIP TROOPERS sequel this May in Los Angeles under the helm of FX maestro Phil Tippett, who did the bug FX on the original. The new film, from original scripter Edward Neumeier, will focus on a small group of troopers outnumbered on an isolated planet and fighting a large group of bugs, who suddenly find out that something even worse than arachnids is "infiltrating" their unit. Hmmm...sounds like Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety," which was previously adapted to the screen as SCREAMERS.

I saw the original STARSHIP TROOPERS in a theatre full of noisy brats while nursing a splitting headache during the Christmas season at the largest mall in the country. So it's no wonder I didn't like it when I first saw it.

Since then, I've continued to go back to it, mainly because my older brother claimed it as one of his recent favorites ( and a great way to show off the sound system to horrified guests ). It has become a film I go back to again and again.

It's now a favorite of mine as well. I was just too distracted the first time out to grasp what a joyfully subversive film this is. It manipulates you into rooting for a facist regime. And that moment of realization is a great thing to see on people's faces. B)

Here's hoping that the sequel will be as good. It's a strange theme so it would be a shame to either see it hammered down, or thrown out completely in favor of action sequences. Maybe if they call it STARSHIP TROOPERS 2: NAZIS IN SPACE?
