View Full Version : Scary stuff

I've been reading over the net about various horror films and what has scared the shit out of people and what hasn't. I appreciate everyone scares differently but some of the comments have baffled me and I've registered here to get a few things off my chest. The Exorcist: What is all the fuss about with this film. Im not denying it is a superb film but I found the end result to be more laughable than scary. The only reason I can think of for this film being banned was the crucifix scene which obviously must have been downright disturbing for people back in the 70s, especially those coming from a religious background. However, Its just not frightening when compared to other films i've seen.
The Amytiville Horror 2 has been described as a rip off from The Exorcist. This might be the case but I found this to be far more chilling and nasty to the point that I refuse to watch it. This is one truly horrible film. The idea of slaying ones family with a shotgun after hearing demonic voices in your head is enough to make anyone ill with fear. Why such a notorious reputation for the Exorcist when theres real 'video nasties' like this out there!!
The Shining has got to be the best and one of the most chilling Horror films ever made. Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece is just fantastic. He sets the mood and atmosphere just right to send shivers down anyones spine. Jack Nicholson's slow deterioration in to an axe wielding maniac is scary beyond belief. Does anyone remeber the part where thye mother and kid go running off in to the Maze and Jack Nicholsons watching them from the window-that face!! Holy shit!!! It just gets you thinking what the hell he's got in store for them.
Other films that I find truly frightening are Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street(part 1 only), The Ring, Friday the 13th (parts 1 and 2), The Fog and My Little Eye which I found chillingly atmospheric.

I agree I don't understand the fuss made about the exorcist, the scariest thing for me was how far that pea soup flew, now that's what i call projectile vomiting! :o
I have to disagree with you about the Shining, like the exorcist I found this over-hyped.
Halloween is my favourite slasher film and actually the only one that's ever scared me, Michael Myers is the king of axe-weilding maniacs.
As for Nightmare on elm street I have to say that's one of the worst horror films i've ever seen.

Other films that I find truly frightening are... The Ring
I may sound like a broken record here, but if you enjoyed THE RING then by all means, do yourself a favor and seek out these other Asian horror flicks...
1. Juon The Grudge (the theatrical film) (Japanese)
2. A Tale Of Two Sisters (Korean)
3. The Phone (Korean)
4. The Eye (Chinese)
5. Uzumaki (aka The Vortex or Spiral) (Japanese)
6. Kairo (aka The Pulse) (Japanese)
7. Dark Water (Japanese)
8. The Uninvited (Korean)

Out of those I've seen The Eye, Dark Water and Uzumaki.
Dark Water is currently my favourite horror film of all time, but I've got Juon the grudge on it's way so I might have to revise my decision.
The Eye started off really well but am I the only one who thought it went a bit rubbish about halfway through? I was pretty unimpressed by the ending, I think this film had so much potential too.
Uzumaki???? Another insane film. I have to say I didn't find this film at all scary, without giving anything away to those who haven't seen it, it lost me when the guys turned into snails. But I guess different things scare different people.

Me, I didn't really dig DARK WATER as much as most people did. Maybe it was because I saw JUON THE GRUDGE first? I don't know.
I will admit, DARK WATER's greatest scene (in my opinion) was when the woman looked up to see the child in her arms while she was in the elevator at the end of the filck. Great visuals. And if you liked that particular scene yourself, then you'll surely enjoy JUON THE GRUDGE. It's just chock full of those kinda images.
Remember to watch JUON THE GRUDGE first. It's the theatrical movie. Don't watch JUON the made-for-tv movie first. It's also often called JUON THE CURSE. There's a BIG difference between the two when a "first time" viewing is involved. Trust me on this, get JUON THE GRUDGE first. You won't be sorry.
And yeah, you're right about UZUMAKI's snails but I thought the movie more than made up for it by the end of the film. Again, just my opinion.
Oh, almost forgot, another Korean "Spooks & Spirits" movie to look out for is WISHING STAIRS. Not really overly scary but it's definitely fueled by good filmmaking with lots of touches that you've seen from other films like JUON, RINGU, and A TALE OF TWO SISTERS.

Yeah that was a good scene. I also really loved the scene when she was in the lift about half way through the film and she looked out and caught a glimpse of the ghost standing at the door of the flat. That scene really creeped me out, my favourite scene from any horror film that I can recall. My only problem with Dark Water was the ending, I think it should have ended in the lift rather than the girl going back to the flat at the end.
I've ordered Juon the Grudge, I'm not entirely sure if it's the theatrical version but I'm pretty sure it is. It's called 'Juon the Grudge' and made no reference to being made for television.
I'll have to look up 'Wishing Stairs' thanks for the recomendation. :)

Oh my god! Watched Juon last night, you guys were right that is one scary film! Really brilliant. And I don't scare easily either. At one point I almost had a spasm I swear! :D
Those ghosts were cool, the little boy was well creepy. That woman with the frog in her throat was nasty and that shadow freaked me out.
I don't think the narrative structure ruined the film, I actually thought it was pretty logical and not hard to follow.
Loved the scene where shadow goes up to the CCTV camera, those eyes! :o
Also the scene where she's in bed and the woman ghost is under her duvet. And the scene where one of them wakes up and the boy is next to her bed.
This film just has scary moment after scary moment. I was tearing my hair out and biting my nails and then I looked at my clock and it was only half way through. It was like torture! It was when I realised I needed the toilet during the film and had to get up and go down stairs that I really started to worry. :D
Well worth the money thanks so much for the reccomendation. :)
1. Dark Water
2. Halloween
3. Juon the Grudge
I now have three films that have succesfully scared me. Woohoo!

So glad you enjoyed it. JUON THE GRUDGE is definitely a one of a kind film. I just wonder if the big budget American remake (starring Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar) will be anywhere near as good.
If you can, check out A TALE OF TWO SISTERS and THE PHONE too. They've both got some great JUON styled moments.

Yeah, thanks again for the reccomendation.
Regarding the remake, it is by the same director but I get the feeling it just wont be the same. I don't know what it is but with the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jason Behr (?) in it I do't think it would creep me out half as much. I could of course be wrong but we shall have to wait and see.
I'll try to check out those other films too. Thanks.

Plain and simple. POLTERGEIST.... I was 10 years old and yes it scared the hell out of me. Ive seen it 100 times and I dont believe that i will ever get tired of it.
but for young first impressions MOTEL HELL made a very lasting one on me. "Meats Meat and Mans Gotta Eat"

Juon is definately better than the eye. The eye has one scene that I thought was great but then it went really bad in my opinion.
I think Halloween is great because it was constructed more like a ghost story than a slasher film and are you telling me that William Shatner isn't a tiny bit scary? :D

The film that actually SCARRED the shite out of me was Jacobs Ladder. Does that mean I suck? Anyway I love spooks and gore and a bit of the old ultraviolence but JL was the one that almost made me turn off the set and say its just a movie

I totally agree with the excoricist part I fall asleep during that movie each time I try and watch it it's just sooo boring to me. my favorite horror movies are Halloween 1 &H2O, Children of the Corn, and May these are the ones that can actually scare the crap out of me. I do like The Shining I thought it was a great movie but some of it didn't make sense to me and I don't like the re-make of it the one with Jack Nicholson and Shelly DuVall was the the best. I haven't seen Dolls yet is it good?
