Saw several films during the weekend of horror cons here in the Cleveland area:
Hellboy - Attended a screening Thursday night. LOVED the opening sequence ... a few lagging moments in the middle ... fun ending with Hellboy battling a very Cthulhu-like critter.
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - For those who don't like 28 Days Later, I'm surprised you would like this remake. No longer do the dead simply walk the earth, they have to be bitten by another zombie first; not so much "No more room in hell" as some mysterious infection spreading rapidly ... which left me thinking, 'Hey, that's not what the original was about.' ... had strange reaction to it ... I just didn't find it all that scary in comparison ... the one element I kept hearing about (baby) came and went, and left me thinking 'That was it?' ... Two conventions in town: Savini, Ken Foree, Clayton Hill (elevator stumbling zombie) and Sharon Ceccatti (nurse zombie) --- the last two were great people, talked with them about half an hour at first, and many other times during the show ... anyway, this new version had its moments, but I would have enjoyed it more on its own merits and not as a remake of the classic.
Next Victim - Low budget feature anthology with Gunner Hansen in the wrap around story ... I didn't quite get the first story (Numb), the second was the best (Monstercam.com) and the third (Under the Table) was interesting, but took far too long for the punchline. But given how horrible most low budget films are, I have to say I liked this one.
13 Seconds - Low budget feature film by Rainstorm Studio ... interesting ... $160,000 budget and had a great trailer to lure viewers in ... won some festival awards and received acclaim from Joe Bob Briggs among many ... just do a Google search (13 Seconds Rainstorm) and find website ... hard to say too much without giving too much away ... just thought bring it to the attention of Horror Express (though most likely it has been all ready).
Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed - Wow, a sequel that doesn't simply rehash (i.e., remake) the original ... ultimately, this was NOT a werewolf movie, but a great little horror movie that had a werewolf in it ... in many ways, I enjoyed this more than the original, mostly because I was just impressed as hell with the acting of Emily Perkins (Brigitte) and Tatiana Maslany (Ghost) ... got a screener of it for review, but it has been released outside of U.S. as most know ... short of it, my favorite horror flick of 2004 (yes, I know its a 2003 release elsewhere). :D
Also saw Superargo and the Faceless Giants, great fun, but I'll spare any comments about it
Just my 1 and 1/2-cents
