View Full Version : NEW SKIN COMING
JohnShaft

After salvaging my Hard Disk from the dead I'm now almost ready to upload it. It will (when fully tweaked) completely integrate with the Forum skin too.
Let me know what you think of it when it's here. Love. Hate. Indifference. Ideas for improvement.
It's my favourite creation, but then my latest one always is.
But bear one thing in mind "I don't dig it because it's not X/Y" isn't what I'm looking for really. There's different skins for different tastes.
Some hate everything that's not black, some are the opposite. It's not intended to please everyone ("you can please all of the people some of the time..."). But I'm hoping/thinking it may be a fair choice as a Default site look.
Oh, and it's white and grey. If you don't dig that you'll probably hate it. :whistling:

This is being updated now.
The old skins might be unavailable for a short while as I may have to disable them.
If the mainpage isn't working for you over the next few hours make sure to try THIS LINK (http://www.horrorexpress.com/index.php?setskin=redhanded) to verify it isn't an issue with the old layout being assigned.
The new layout will be patchy in places until I get it all up.
Bear with us.

OK, it's been added, though it's not completely uploaded yet.
There's an amount of tweaking I'll have do to it tomorrow, but the gist is there, even if it doesn't look it's best yet.
The old skins are still available of course.
The main page has been replaced by the news page for the moment.
Once I've got the main page finished tomorrow I'll add it to the Forums too.

Looks good but it would look even better if it was black. o:)

Hahah. Thanks Dawn.
Point taken about the Black, but then there's already a black skin. Plus you can't really do a gradiant/metal skin with black, you can only do well, um, *black*.
I will get a black Forum skin up as soon as this is all finished though.
Thanks
John

Well, I haven't had time to get anything done with it in the last week or so Raven. I've hit a little bump in the road in trying to do something with the Forum part of it. But I'm still planning on completing it soon. Thanks for the reminder. Often all it needs is someone to give me a kick up the arse to get me going. :teeth:

Hah, I know mate.
Believe me, any mention of anything I'm supposed to be doing (but have put off for an eternity) is usually enough to kick me into action out of guilt. I figure Scott's learnt this 93 times over by now.
I'm a great starter, and a terrible finisher. If DaVinci was me he'd have had a career made of *unfinished* masterpieces. It's a character flaw I'm working on.
Thanks for the positive comments though, I really appreciate it. It's nice to know these things are well received. I'll make a special effort for you. Hah.
One of the problems I ran into was replicating the layout I'd made in Photoshop in the Forum Software. Which has slowed me down considerably.
I've got so much other stuff I need to do for HE beside this too. It's sickening.

Believe me I didn't realise when I started either.
I'm only glad Scott, and everyone who reviews, is there to handle the content.
But yeah, designing is a pain. Particularly as I'm never 100% happy with a look to keep it that way for say, a year, like most sites. And that doesn't even include all the coding, and features I want to add.
Sure it's easy to keep everything the same after it's done. But until I'm totally satisfied that isn't going to happen. There's barely a horror site out there that I wouldn't change many things.

I suppose really thats a good thing because most other sites dont really change all that much and i think its good to change a site every now and then just so theres some variation and it doesn't become boring. Once a site becomes boring it becomes pointless. My mate and I were working on a website for films/games but because he didnt want to change the layout and stuff the whole thing dried up.
We are planning to revive it at some point, but like you said, designing and coding is a major pain in the arse. lol.
Another i like about this sites layout is that it isn't black back ground with blood, which is a good effect but every horror site uses it. Very much looking forward to the new skin :)

Yeah, it is hard work, I've lost all my FTP details (Whoops!) so that doesn't help.
Updating a website daily, along with all my moderation jobs is not easy, especially when I have to do homework too.
I try and do it all at weekends now, but I moderate everyday. :)

not at all mate i was just saying that nearly every horror site was that layout and it would be great to see something unique for a change thats all lol

Hah, no problems mate, it is LONG overdue.
I just can't seem to progress with it. I've got bits of it I like and other bits I just can't seem to get right. ATM I've actually shifted my attention to programming because I'm just spinning my wheels with the skin.
I've even thought of purchasing a template and modifying it, or hiring someone to make one, but I'm not sure I would end up with anything closer to my liking anyway.
Not only that, it's also complicated by the forum software. Mainly because I'm thinking of either updating this software (which is far from new) or changing to another forum software altogether.

well if you do need any help with skins or anything code related i have a few friends who can do all sorts. One lot are desiging their own game and have a website up for it. And the other guy has just finished a college course on web design so he'll be more than happy to help out if you need it

Thanks mate.
Coding wise I'm pretty alright.
Design wise I'm OK too I guess. In this case I just don't want to change anything until I'm completely happy with it. Damn perfectionism.

Mate, soon I will be, believe me.
Just deleted three uber-trolls all using the same IP.
I'd make some comment that they must be about 13 going on their maturity levels, but I won't as it would be an insult to you. :afro:
I guess it's as simple as some people are just *born* utter c**ts...

Damn your lack of forgetting! :D
I did do another edit on the one I had a couple of weeks ago. Ya'know I'm just so fucking picky on everything though that I can't settle on one and say "I like that!". And that most defintely includes the main one. I'm at the point where I'd really like someone who is actually, you know, good at this shit to do one. But they would all need green stuff. And me and the green stuff, as always, are in different worlds. :(

my lack of forgetting things tends to vary :D i remebered seeing that black one you were working on and that was awesome. I would get a mate of mine to talk to you about skin as he would do it for nothing but he's disappeared

I'd tell you I'll have a look at working on a, or that, black one, but instead I won't promise anything I can't promise.
It needs doing badly though. I'm just getting way too picky on what I'm willing to change too, which is a little silly because as long as it's better than current I don't think it matters.

Better late than never?
I'm pretty happy with this one, and I'm almost ready to sign off on it. I could actually get it up now, as I've got it running fully locally, as that's not just a fancy-smancy screenshot of a Photoshop mockup but a screenshot of the actual page. Got a couple of things I want to have a look at doing first though.
Hope you like it.
[Be warned it's a big-ass screenshot - 400K - so give it a whilte to load.]

This should now be working with all the Movie Reviews, I've been testing it today. It works with the news, but hasn't been tweaked properly.
If you want to try it out hit up this URL (http://www.horrorexpress.com/filmreview.php?id=322&setskin=demoni).
To get back to the main layout hit this URL (http://www.horrorexpress.com/filmreview.php?id=322&setskin=redhanded).
