What do you think is the scarriest video game?

Hi Goanimo.

Scary Games huh?

Some of my favourite Scary Games.

Alone in the Dark on the PC was the Grand Daddy. Amazing game for it's time. The graphics really immersed you into the game. It was also a pretty good story, and the atmosphere was purely Lovecraftian.

Resident Evil. Totally ground breaking games. Zombies, crows, spiders, and many more weird things. Excellent story. Totally immersive. I'd have to say, for total game experience, this is probably the one that stands out to me the most. It did what it did so well that it became an instant classic.

Alien Vs Predator. For "making you jump" shocks this was one of the best. The whole super dark look to it. Nasty fast-as-fuck Aliens scuttling around and jumping out on you. Man, try playing as a marine within Alien infested corridors, and the little spiderlike Aliens crawling across the floor to jump on your face.
Lights out. On your own. Totally unsettling.

I'll try and think of any more.

I bought a PS2 this Christmas with the intention of playing all the Survival Horror Games like Silent Hill. I'll get around to it soon.
Has anyone played Silent Hill 1/2/3?

Was watching X-PLAY last night and as per usual admiring the lovely Morgan Webb ( BEHOLD! The future Mrs. Davis? (http://www.horrorexpress.com/images/morgantop.jpg) ). Anyway, I'm interesting in checking out some horror games but don't have any firsthand knowledge. All the same, they showed a preview of THE SUFFERING which is about to come out for XBox. And all I can say is SWEET JESUS! That looks terrifying!

I'm a big fan of the Resident Evil game's, and I think that they've all produced a couple of good scares and great atmosphere.

Silent Hill was very freaky, a well made horror game!

Can't realy think of any other's.

"Resident Evil" (the very first part) is an amazing game with many shocking moments.

I played "Silent Hill 2": it was okay but nothing too speacial. Some scary moments that seemed to repeat often (so after a time, it wasn't that scary anymore). "Resident Evil - Code: Vernika X" for instance was far better.

Anybody played "Nightmare Creatures"? I got the second part, unfortunately liked it only for about two hours.

I enjoyed the original PSX game (even with all it's flaws) but never played the second.

I love Resident Evil but it just isn't scary. Silent Hill although drawn out and most of the time boring is still the scariest game ive played

What is it exactly that makes "Doom 3" that scary?

The darkness, the atsmosphere, just the plain silence, and maybe the odd clanking sound, or roar, believe me, it is scary as hell with surround sound headphones.

Its not scary unless you have immersed yourself into it.

I found the gamecube remake of Resident Evil quite scary, the advanced graphics really help intencify the atmosphere. I can't wait for Resident Evil 4

I personally, did not find the Resident Evil series scary, but that's just me.

Don't laugh, but I think the original Max Payne game is rather scary too.

It is great, I haven't got Max Payne 2 yet though... It's not a horror, its like, a murder/adventure/action.

I'm surprised nobody has opted for Silent Hill yet. Those games always did it for me.

Pretty obvious here, but I'd have to swing my vote towards Silent Hill 2. I'm a big fan of spooky games but to be perfectly honest the only games that have seemed to stand out for me personally are the Silent Hill games. Bar Silent Hill 4 and Silent Hill: Origins as they where just great steaming piles of refried pap.

The first game captured my imaginatin from the very beginning, as it seemed a lot laid back on the action when comparing it to the biggest name in Survival horror at the time, which'd be Resident Evil [Or Alone In The Dark for you hardcore PC types], but where as Resi would opt for the more "BOO! OMG WE SCAREDED YOU GOOD!" technique, Silent Hill would let this bizarre world develop around you and before you know it you're walking around an abandonned school wondering why the bloody hell some weird squat, squeaky ghosts have a habit of gathering around you.

But the second used the Playstation 2's new [at teh time] technology to really push the series that little bit more. What with enhanced visual and sound quality, plus a much better script and a genuinely touching story revolving around one man's love for his dead wife; so much so that he's willing to chainsaw some zombie nurses faces off to get to her. Only to be treated to one of the best plot twists ever to appear in gaming history from here till the next millenia. Add to that some of the best enemy design I have ever seen and some genuinely freaky moments all lean me ever towards Silent Hill; 2 being one of the genres greatest ever titles.

As some peopel in teh thread may beg to differ, it comes to a point with resident Evil where you try to take it seriously - only to have it throw a wobbly and present you with a transexualist main bad guy [not once, but TWICE IN THE SERIES, re: Veronica X and Dead Aim]. But with Silent Hill, you know that things are going to be taken with the auiences attitude towards everything held within the diegetic world in mind. So instead of some generic looking freak-o; you'll get a rather cool and subtle worrying freak-o. Half the enemies in Silent Hill 3 still give me the jibblies.

Hidious fanboyisms aside, Project Zero is also one of my favourite scary games. Pretty much teh same reason as why i like Silent Hill so muc: top notch atmosphere and an overall feeling of unadulterated doom lingering over you're Japanese schoolgirl protagonist, who has to protect herself with ye olde camera. No AK-47s, no Colts - just a dusty old camera. Eek. Plus the ghosts are spazm enducing scarey.

Obscure is a good laugh with mates too, just don't play it single player as it's blummin' rubbish that way.

Honourable mentions:

Condemmed
Doom 3 [in the dark, with headphones, no pansy Duct tape mod = classic]
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil [Gamecube version]
