What publications do you read?
What titles, now defunct, do you have fond memories of?
What titles could you not live without?

Magazines and Fanzines offer a cheap(ish) way to keep up to date with what's happening, and to look back at some classic (and not so classic) titles...

I used to read a now defuinct UK magazine called "Fear" that covered all things horror including books, music and artists, but it was overly mainstream.
The odd "Hammer House of Horror" also delivered the goods on English and U'S new and classic films.

I later moved to "the Dark Side" (as it were), that covered more obscure Euro titles and gory horror film along with the more mainstream stuff. It's still going strong today and even has it's own DVD and Book publishing off shoots.

As my collecting grew more serious and i moved onto films from all over the World titles like the legendary "Deep Red", "Shock Express" "Video Watchdog" and "Asian/Euro Trash/Cult Cinema" became essential.
"Fangoria" (and it's cheap retread "Gore Zone") was flicked through but hardly ever bought, and "Gorotica" (still going) was a sometimes guilty pleasure.

On the UK front "Eastern Heroes" (who helped the UK lead the way in the Hong Kong film revival of the early 90's) it's off shoot "Film Extremes", "Imaginator" and the excellent "Giallo Pages" all delivered the goods.

But it's the smaller fanzines/mags (now rare in the UK, though things have picked up) that i remember most fondly.
These were labours of love by fans, for fans.
Regular buys were: "Delirium", "Killing Moon", "Bleeders Digest" (one of my first ever horror film reads), "Psychotic Reaction", "Flesh and Blood" and the wonderful "In the Flesh" were all regular buys.

Now new stuff like "DVD Zone", "Sinerama", "Is it Uncut" and "Deranged" are trying to get the smaller side of things back up again with great (if sometimes expensive) success.

So what about you guys and gals?

I bought Flesh and Blood when it was available, and still buy Darkside, and Video Watchdog.

But nothing else.

Only ones easily availble to me are Darkside and Rue Morgue. I pick up the new Rue Morgue whenever I see it on a mag rack. Darkside is a little on the expensive side and I could care less about what new DVDs are coming to the UK, but I'll buy it anyway when I like the cover art or a certain article catches my eye.

I also get Video Watchdog every month, just about.

When I was much smaller I used to, um, borrow my older cousin's Fangoria mags to check out all the gorey pictures. o:)

Fangoria, in fact I looked through the back issue prices of the ones I've got.
Seems I've got about $600 worth of gore mags. :woot:

I have always been a Fangoria fan. If my memory serves me correct...wasnt there a Slaughterhouse magazine?

Unfortunately, with the internet providing fast-as-lightning regular and current information through individually hosted websites, the days of the horror magazine or fanzine just might be numbered.

I fondly remember all too well the thrills of nabbing the newest issues of such greats as DEEP RED or ASIAN TRASH CINEMA or FANTASY FILM MEMORY. But now, it's so much easier to surf the web for the info you seek which will be more current than any monthly paper periodical can deliver, ya know.

But I still try to support the "little guy". I went outta my way to find ROB BEWICK's terrific horror-zine, DERANGED. And that's hard considering I live in the USA and his puppy is UK based. Yet, I'm glad that I did. I ordered them directly from him and you can too at:

Do yourself a favor, and check it out!

Remember, AS LONG AS IT'S... DERANGED!

Oh, almost forgot the praise... what a GREAT idea for a post, LUCIOS BEARD. Your mentions of various small press fanzines has me digging in boxes looking for all of my old horror goods right now.
