Based on a couple recommendations, I decided to give the online rental place, Netflix (http://www.netflix.com) a shot. After all, two week free trial, right? Besides I need to see some of these horror films I've missed out on in recent months while getting my new comp up and running.

I've been looking at their site now that I've put my stuff in and damn if they don't have a lot.

My question is if anyone has used this service? Any good things to say? Any horror stories (the bad kind)? Or do you guys rent from some other online or brick & mortar place?

I have been using NetFlix for about a month now. So far it is great. I am on the keep 5 disks at a time plan right now. I have gotten 15 movies from them so far. The selection is pretty damn good also. I have not had an complaints as of yet.

I joined NETFLIX years ago when they first started up. For me, they were the easiest way to get ahold of Asian DVD's instead of buying them outright, which at the time, was harder to do than it is now. Also, they had the largest anime collection for rent I had ever seen before.

But alas, back then, they didn't have many service stations so anything I rented had to be mailed clear across the country from the east coast to the west coast, and I was lucky if I got in 6 or 7 rentals per month. Now, I think they've got centers all across the country so rentals should come and go very quickly which is alot better because no matter what plan you pick as your subscription, you can only have so many DVD's out at one time. So just make sure that there's a rental area near your location so you can get the most rentals for your money, ya know.

One thing which I'm sure is good now is their collection of rare, OOP (Out Of Print), and obscure titles that may be hard to find anywhere else. But then again, I'm sure they still only cater to region 1 customers so any foriegn release that hasn't crossed the pond yet won't be available for rent. Maybe enough e-mail responses will prompt them to carry DVD's from other regions in the near future. Who knows...

I have used Netflix for several weeks now and have one major gripe and WARNING to all. When I was under their "Standard" membership plan (3 DVD's) I would get the movies so fast, sometimes the very next day. But once I bit and upgraded to the "Ultimate" membership (8 DVD's) the delay from the time they say "Shipped" is now at least 5 business days before I receive them! This has been consistently the case since I upgraded. I could spit tacks, have kittens! There is no doubt in my mind that the delays are intentional, meant to control their shipping costs, so I don't think upgrading to Ultimate is worth it. Reason: I was getting 3 DVD's shipped and turned around twice each 7 days (under the Standard membership) for a total of 6 each week, but now I get 8 each week (under the Ultimate membership) and am paying DOUBLE the price! For only 2 more DVD's! DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR NETFLIX ACCOUNT IF YOU WANT SHORT SHIPPING TIMES!

It is odd that you mention the shipping delay. I upgraded mine to 5 DVD's and there has been an extra day added during the shipment process. I thought it was my imagination, but apparently not. When I first signed up it took 2 days for them to receive the package in the mail. They sent the other set of DVD's out the same day. Since I upgraded there is a mysterious day added in before they show the DVD's received. This whole delay of shipment thing may sound absurd, but I think that is what they are doing.
