So, he missed the Halloween start date. Big deal. It still sounds as though Rob Zombie is moving full speed ahead on HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES PART II. In a rare story not related to J. Lo, Britney Spears, R. Kelly or Metallica, MTV News reported that the script has been authorized and he's ready to start casting in the new year.
"It's a very different film," Zombie said. "It's much darker and more serious. It's a gritty crime movie like BADLANDS (a film loosely based on the Starkweather murders that HE recommends you track down right now!) There's nothing campy or wacky at all."
The new film, which begins with a SWAT team raid on the title house, was a much easier sell than the original, which was stuck in limbo forever. Zombie seems to have no dillusions about the way the business works. "I knew that no matter who put it out," Zombie said, "if it made money they would want another one, because that's all they care about. If I hadn't already gone through the whole process in music, it might have freaked me out. But dealing with CORPSES sort of reminded me of the early days of dealing with White Zombie, especially LA SEXORCISTO: DEVIL MUSIC VOL. 1, which got slaughtered. Every review was beyond horrible. But we toured forever, and somehow it just worked."
Zombie says the film will contain much less comic relief. "It's going to be totally different than anyone expects," he said. "And it will probably be a lot more violent."
As per usual, Zombie is very busy and the CORPSES sequel is hardly from the only thing he's working on. Zombie will write songs for his third solo album (not including the remix discs), which he says will be much darker. He is also relaunching his dormant record label, Zombie A Go-Go.
His SPOOKSHOW INTERNATIONAL comic has been such a success that he will continue work on that. He is also collaborating with Steve Niles (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) on at least three comic books. These comics include, "Bigfoot" a legend briefly touched upon in the original CORPSES, "The Nail" about an old school wrestler who gets involved with a motorcycle gang and "Lords of Salem," an album/comic hybrid about an evil metal band (hmm, personal experience here?).
Zombie hopes to release HO1KC2 as early as summer 2004, but don't be surprised if it gets pushed back to at least Halloween. Hey, these things take time. Though thankfully not as long as the original HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES.
