One of the greatest Hong Kong actresses of all time, Anita Mui, has passed away.

Mui began her career in music, shooting to pop stardom in the early eighties with her hit "Homecoming." She continued to gather awards and fans in the following years and became Hong Kong's reigning Queen of Pop. Some of her music was deemed controversial back in the day and her "Bad Girl" was banned from many radio stations. Because of this, and her appearance early in her career, she was often called the "Madonna of Hong Kong."

But most fans around the world will remember her amazing work in Hong Kong cinema. She was one of the costumed heroines in THE HEROIC TRIO and it's sequel, THE EXECUTIONERS. She all but stole the show in DRUNKEN MASTER II as Jackie Chan's meddling but well-meaning stepmother.

In horror, she won a Hong Kong Film Award for her ghostly turn in ROGUE. She also won awards for her work in FATE and EIGHTEEN SPRINGS. She was nominated for her performances in AU REVOIR MON AMOUR, JUSTICE MY FOOT and RUMBLE IN THE BRONX. Her music was also nominated in HOMECOMING, ROGUE, AU REVOIR MON AMOUR, TWIN BRACELETS and THE HEROIC TRIO. She won a Taiwanese Golden Horse Award for ROGUE and was nominated for the award again with 2002's JULY RHAPSODY.

Some of her other memorable films include: A BETTER TOMORROW III, SCARED STIFF, 100 WAYS TO MURDER YOUR WIFE, MIRACLES, SHANGHAI ENCOUNTER, THE MOON WARRIORS (pictured), THE MAGIC CRANE, MY FATHER IS A HERO, WHO'S THE MAN WHO'S THE WOMAN, MIDNIGHT FLY and many others.

Mui held a press conference last fall and announced she was battling cervical cancer. "I am not a weak person," she said. "I can tell you that I have never had any fears and I will win this fight."

Her older sister had also died from cancer in 2000. When Mui announced her illness, several of her famous friends, including Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Nicholas Tse and Jackie Cheung - joined her in support.

Unfortunately, Mui took a turn for the worse recently and was admitted to Hong Kong's Sanitorium Hospital after slipping into a coma earlier this week. She passed away on Tuesday morning.

Anita Mui was only forty years old when she died. In her nearly fifty feature films, she was always recognizable. She posessed an amazing range, tackling comedy, drama and action with equal vigor and bringing refreshing energy to every role she was in.
