It seems like every horror site runs stories on figurines and action figures. And that I guess is why we don't. Speaking for myself, I wouldn't have the knowledge or curiosity to really speak out on the subject with any authority. But I gotta say, I am tempted to check out Clive Barker's Tortured Souls series just for the original story that goes with it. Now, I might not have to as there is movement on the TORTURED SOULS movie. And let me tell you, this is gonna be sweet.

Barker is signed to write and direct the film for Universal. Barker has not directed a film since 1995's underrated LORD OF ILLUSIONS. Barker's always had a bit of a push-pull with the studios. The only one he ever really had authority on was HELLRAISER. 20th Century Fox butchered NIGHTBREED, both in the editing and marketing of the film (It's still a great ride and highly recommended). LORD OF ILLUSIONS was cut by the studio of nearly twenty minutes if I recall, and has shown up in it's most complete print on DVD.

As Bloody Disgusting reports: "The story centers on a man who decides he wants to be rid of his wife in favor of a more interesting life. The man 'exchanges' his wife for a demon goddess from another world, throwing her into a shadowy world of monsters - one from which she must escape and return to his everyday world to rescue their child and vanquish the demon."

Tortured Souls is a line of figures, each containing a bit of the story. They are marketed by McFarlane Toys, one of the many Factories of Cool run by SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane. McFarlane himself will produce the film and consult on the script.

With a DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, a new CHUCKY film and now this, Universal seems to finally be recovering from their horror shunning of a couple years back. Let's hope this one pulls through. It will be nice to see Barker behind the camera again.

I like the sound of this one a lot.

Firstly I've always been a big fan of Clive Barker. He's what passes as a Horror Visionary in my book. I have a great deal of faith in anything he turns out.
NIGHTBREED I loved, and I wasn't even aware it was butchered Scott. A totally underappreciated movie. Same goes for LORD OF ILLUSIONS. And weren't they talking about making a TV series out of that? I wonder if that idea has been ditched.

McFarlane Producing could also be a good thing. I think the SPAWN animated series was just brilliant.

I know nothing about TORTURED SOULS but it sounds like a great idea. It has Barker written all over it.

I am really excited by this news. Check out the series 2 line also if you have never seen them. The Tortured Souls from the second series are even better I think. As long as Barker gets to run without too much studio involvement this could turn out wonderful. Two big news breaks (this and Argento's) have made this a good week for the genre.

With the exception of Lord of Illusions, I gotta admitt I despise pretty much everything Barker has ever produced. I read 3 of his novels and that was 3 too many. I have seen pretty much everything that's been put to film, he has been involved with, and pretty much left with a bad taste. Lord was fantastic however! Only thing I can figure is A) he had more to do with it than his other films? Or B) he had very little to do with it at all so it turned out great? If the new flick is like Lord, I'm all over it. If it's like the rest. Count me as absent that day.
