The most recent DVD's that I picked up were Umberto Lenzi's Black Demons and Mario Bava's the Whip and the Body and Baron Blood. I ordered them today off of Amazon. What were your most recent DVD purchases?

I've just received my first wave of (self bought) Christmas DVD's.
BLADE II: Haven't seen it, and I'm REALLY looking forward too it.
THEY LIVE: Man I love it. It's a "dumb sci-fi/actioner" with a brain. I first saw it on TV about 7 years ago, and knew nothing about it. I missed the beginning, and started watching it at the point he starts to figure out what's going on. So many things I like about it.
If Arnie had had Roddy Pipers role (and it had had a bigger budget) this would have been HUGE. But Piper's portrayal is way better than Arnie would have delivered.
DARK CITY: Another Film I absolutely love. And one that, for me, didn't receive enough credit. I think that's partly down to it being released at the same time as the Matrix, and that it had "no big names" in it. That's a good thing though in my book.

All of 'em for less than $30's. So I'm pretty happy with the bunch.

I also have my eye on SESSION 9. Which is cheap too. I'm a bit of a bargain hunter atm as, not having much money, I'd way rather buy 3 older films than 1 new one for the same price.
Oh, also 28 DAYS LATER, which is a little more expensive. Plus/Minus is I haven't seen this either, so I don't know what I'll think of it. I've even only skim-read Scott's review of it so I don't give too much away. :pinch:

Blade II is GREAt! I am sure that you will like it. They Live is one of my favorite Carpenter flicks. Ihave come here to chew bubble gum....... I actually haven't seen Dark City. I need to check it out. I have heard good things about it. I would go with the Session 9 DVD over 28 Days Later. Personally I was a little iffy on 28 Days Later. I would probably rent/borrow a copy first. Peoples opinions on it tend to fall on one side of the fence or the other. I am a bargin shopper also. I buy from individuals a lot. I got Squirm, Slumber Party Massacre 1 and 2 for 14 dollars last week. If the boards ever get going good it would be cool to put a buy/seel/trade forum up.

Plus I've heard so many people say the first half of 28' is great and the second half is a total letdown.

I have the same bad habit of buying DVD's instead of renting them first. Of course, with the Asian cinema I love sooo much, there's no outlet to rent so I have to go into the purchase blind. Sometimes you win, and win BIG, but sometimes you lose and it hurts ever so badly.

My most recent purchases (within the past four or five weeks) include...

1. A TALE OF TWO SISTERS
2. WISHING STAIRS
3. NAKED LUNCH (Criterion)
4. ALIAS (Complete Season 2)
5. THE TWINS EFFECT
6. LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (Extended Edition)
7. SHIVER
8. PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN
9. THE TWELVE KINGDOMS Volume 1 (Japanese Anime)
10. THE VALLEY OF GWANGI

I've recently won these DVD's offfa EBAY but haven't received them yet...

1. FULL METAL YAKUZA
2. DEAD OR ALIVE 2
3. THE HOLE
4. WITCH HUNTER ROBIN Volume 2 (Japanese Anime)
5. JUON: THE GRUDGE

I have been burning a lot of my old VHS onto DVD, now that I have a DVD recorder. Of course, I have to be careful. I had someone from eBay who was upset that I re-circulated a film that wasn't exactly an original... even though it wasn't a copy I had made (I don't do that) I had bought that same film from someone else on eBay.

Just picked up JEEPERS CREEPERS and JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 on DVD last week.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005JM78.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I had seen JC1 before but I was alittle let down after watching JC2. I think they showed just too much of the "Creeper Demon" in the movie. I felt that it took away some of the creature's mystique.

Or it's the fact that JC1 made director VICTOR SALVA enough money that he decided to spend it all on CGI effects showing the creature flying around and the such.

Which one did you guys (and gals) like?

Would that I heard that before, you may have gotten dibs on some of my old Hammer tapes or perhaps EL TOPO I can probably still copy the DVD once my new comp is up and running.

I'll make a list, although it may it may take a tiny bit. I swear I am serious warming to the idea of a "pimping" section of the forums for legal trades and whatnot.

I don't moderate or run this fine message board and I certainly wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble with copyright issues but over at THE CHOPHOUSE (http://www.fanboy.info/yabbse/index.php?board=23), we do all kinds of swapping and buying of movie media (original DVD's, copied VCD's, DVD-R's, VHS videos, etc) and it's all turned out really great so far.

I suppose as long as it's kept to a "collector-to-collector" basis without money being made, it all depends on the people involved and if it's considered to be illegal activity which it can easily become, ya know.

But, of course, it's completely up to the owners here as to whether or not they wanna get involved in a trade forum between members on the board. Perhaps such actions might be best to keep them to private messages and personal e-mails instead (hint, hint).

Oh, by the way, what program do you use to make your DVD's? I've been thinking about getting a burner but a salesperson told me once that even though you have a DVD copier, that doesn't mean that you can just go rent a movie and then copy it to a blank DVD-R. There was something about the factory DVD having a larger storage capacity than the average DVD-R and you would need to compress the info, then run it through some sort of software program to copy it back over.

Any ideas? I would certainly looooove to make my own DVD's.

-Steve

Well, first of all, I'm copying VHS to DVD, not DVD to DVD. Second, I get around the multi-disc option by not using a burner. Yep, I actually have a DVD recorder from Cyberhome that I record all my VHS and TV on. It still doesn't work on copy-protected tapes, even if you own them, but that's the only flaw.

What you are talking about is accurate. There are programs for DVD burning out there that will split your film onto two discs. But some programs are doing better at this. For instance, I have heard that DVD X Copy Gold or DVD X Copy Platinum are the crream of the crop. They also have compression (Platinum having "manual compression" which allows you to compress at will) that will make sure the film gets on one disc. If copying a DVD that's with the special features, commentary everything. It also is the only system that reportedly overrides copy protection. HOWEVER... I have not used this program (or any burning program as of yet) AND there is currently a court case underway which may render the program illegal. It is still on the market as of now. What you do with it though is up to you.

That is correct. DVD's with lots of features are dual layered disks and have twice the capacity. The majority though--especially the kind of films I watch are single layered. The best program for shrinking a dvd is DVDShrink. It is free to download and use. You can assign different compression rates to different parts of the dvd. For instance you can compress an interview so that the movie itself is at a higher rate. Usually you can't tell that the DVD was compressed.

You can use Nero or the software that comes with the burner itself. Right now I am using the software that came with my HP burner and it seems to be doing just fine. If the disk does not need shrinking all you have to do is just make an exact copy. Another useful program is DVD Decrypter. This lets you rip the dvd image to your hard drive. You can use Dameon Tools to then mount the image and then use the DVD Shrink program to shrink the video. There are a lot of different ways to do it. I use them all occasionally. If you need any help feel free to email me or pm me.

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

The software problem was the major reason I haven't bought a DVD burner yet. But now that I've kinda got an idea of what's going on, I'll start searching again.

One other question, is there any particular stat I should be looking for when shopping for a burner? I mean, I've seen some that are only $89, and then I've seen some at $200, if not more.

Ideas? Suggestions? Model recommendations?

I have a HP burner that was $150. so far it has done great. I would go for a dual format burner. Mine unfortunately is not. I would go to CNET and just read up on some of the burner reviews they have. truthfully i am kind of wary of the $89 dollar ones floating around. I bought my burner at Walmart because of their good return policies. What you buy at Best Buy is what your stuck with. Several people I know through the internet have had their burners die on them. I would make sure the place you pick it up from has a good exchange policy. www.newegg.com generally has good prices. you may want to look there.

Oh man, THE MISSION is a classic JOHNNIE TO Hong Kong gangster / buddy-camaraderie masterpiece. If you haven't already seen some of his other gangster films, I'd highly recommend FULLTIME KILLER and RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

As for INFERNAL AFFAIRS, what can I say but it's probably the BEST new Hong Kong film I've seen in the past six months. Director ANDREW LAU puts together an excellent crime / suspense drama here. And if you're curious about other ANDREW LAU flicks, I'd suggest some high flying swordplay epics like THE STORMRIDERS, THE DUEL, and A MAN CALLED HERO. They're ALL great movies!

Ahh, I loved TOMIE. Saw it twice and reviewed it for CultCuts right here. (http://www.cultcuts.net/reviewsmovies/t/tomie.htm) Still have to see all the other ones in the series which look like a mixed bag.

As for THE KINGDOM, I loved the original. Sat there for four 1/2 hours and didn't move once it started. It was just so riveting that I was never bored once. I will not see King's version until I finally get around to seeing KINGDOM II, thankfully a much easier thing since the DVD floodgates have opened. Personally, I'm not terribly excited for the King version. His TV projects aren't always terrible, but they are typically pretty "blah."

Nice review of TOMIE. Yet I don't agree with the quality of the new DVD. It's pretty bad and looks to be the exact same print that the HK company UNIVERSE LASER used years ago on their release. It's muddy, grainy, and even though ADNESS claims it's 16x9, it isn't.

As for the other TOMIE films, I've got them all but I've only actually watched parts 2 and 5 so far. And honestly, the first one is still the best out of the three I've seen.

I'm hoping that the third film (TOMIE REBIRTH) will be good since it's directed by JUON THE GRUDGE mastermind, Takashi Shimuzu. Also, I'm hoping that the forth DVD (TOMIE ANOTHER FACE) will rock since it's a three story collection that should be more like the original Junji Ito manga, which I've read and enjoyed.

Over the past couple months, I picked up...

DJANGO / DJANGO STRIKES AGAIN - One of Anchor Bay's rarest double DVD sets featuring the wacky Italian gunslinger character Django played by Franco Nero.

ALIAS: The Complete Third Season - The continuing saga of the Bristow spy family. Good stuff indeed and Jennifer Gardner's such a sweetie!

ZOMBI 2 "Special Edition" - This is the two-disc edition by Media Blaster's "Shriek Show" label and NOT the single disc Elite version that came out about the same time.

STARHUNTER Volumes 1 & 2 - a cheezy little British / Canadian sci-fi tv series starring Michael Pare as a bounty hunter. I know, it's not too terribly good but it's got decent CGI and the two DVD's were only $6 each and had a whopping 16 episodes on them.

MGM "Midnight Movies" Double Feature - Ah, the joys of "Monster Attacks" movies from the 70's. This particular DVD came with EMPIRE OF THE ANTS and TENTACLES.

THE ROCK "Criterion Collection" - Even though I owned the standard DVD for some time, I stumbled onto the 2-disc Criterion edition at a local videogame store for only $10.

GARUDA - Thailand's answer to Japanese Kaiju flicks and a pretty decent movie in it's own right.

YOKAI MONSTERS - I picked up both R1 DVD's of Spook Warfare (Volume 1) and Along With Ghosts (Volume 3) for $10 each offa EBAY.

THE EYE 2 - an import bootleg featuring some of the best scenes of people falling off of buildings you'll ever see on film.

JIANG HU 2004 - another import bootleg featuring Andy Lau in his latest crime / Triad / action movie.

UZUMAKI - I finally upgraded my R3 DVD for the new R1 release in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1. Sweeeeet!

SHAOLIN SOCCER - I wasn't going to buy it but as it turns out, the new R1 Miramax DVD release sports the original Chinese version of the film so you're not stuck with the edited English dubbed version only.

OROCHI THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON - This is the renamed R1 release of the Japanese giant monster Toho flick, Yamato Takeru.

New purchases are "Halloween 2" in the HMV sale. Widescreen with comm track.

"The Rutles", cheap as chips DVD of the Eric Idle 'Beatles' spoof from '78. Very funny in parts, but if you do not know your 'Beatles' trivia some of the jokes pass you by. And as i am in no way a fan of 'The Beatles'...some are indeed being passed by.

Finally got "Thriller: A Cruel picture"

"Hardgore" bizarre 70's mix of off the wall gore, flying rocket dildos, satanic goings on and hardcore sex! Groovy.

"That Peter Kay Thing". Top notch very English humour that was the forerunner to the superb "Phoenix Nights".

I thought DARKNESS FALLS was surprisingly pretty darn good considering it's a rather run-of-the-mill gore-less Hollywood horror flick. I quite enjoyed it. The film had some right nice spooky visuals (possibly Asian influenced), some decent acting (EMMA "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" CAUFEILD stars), and the some snazzy special effects for the "Tooth Fairy" creature. If you in any way like mainstream horror flicks like JEEPERS CREEPERS or FINAL DESTINATION, then you'll probably like this too.

Always on the search for cheap "giant-monsters-attack" DVD entertainment, here's a batch from the Wal-Mart five dollar bin...

1. PYTHON - Wow, what a bad movie! Soooo bad in fact, that once the lousy acting lead characters left a scene, you were simply overjoyed to see the likes of the other people in the film (ie: CASPER "Starship Troopers" VAN DIEN and ROBERT "Freddy" ENGLUND) on the screen. I mean to tell ya, they're Oscar winners compared to the rest.

Story, simple! A covert army plane is taking a genetically enhanced giant python snake to a secret military weapons base (it's ALWAYS gotta be a secret military base, right?) when, BAM, the plane goes down on the outskirts of a small town (it's ALWAYS gotta be a small town, right?). The snake survives the crash and starts to feed on the citizens of the countryside. It can't be killed with bullets. It can spit acid. It moves faster than a car. And it's up to a gaggle of young stupid people to stop it. They do and that's that.

Final thoughts, the giant python was pretty damn cheezy (in all it's aspects) and the movie's plot nearly bored me to tears. Bad script, bad dialogue, bad acting. And before you ask "What did you expect?!", well, let me just say that lots of times a bad monster movie can be good for actually being bad. You know the kind I'm taling about. Unfortunately, PYTHON wasn't one of those.

Yet, if you searched really really hard, you'd find that there were a few things that you could enjoy about this whole mess of a movie. They would probably be...

- The outrageous appearances by the infamous "Kenny The Closer".

- The much welcomed death of the Star Trek: Next Generation wunderkid, WIL "Wesley Crusher" WHEATON.

- And, of course, the end of the movie which allows you to go about the rest of your life.

2. PYTHON 2 - Now this one was a surprise because it was really pretty decent. Well, as good as a giant snake movie can be, that is.

Karate Kid 1's bad boy, BILLY ZABKA returns from the original PYTHON movie as a FBI-turned-CIA agent who's assigned to retrieve TWO giant python super-snakes from the clutches of the Russian secret military. He's got a squad of mercenary soldier thugs at his disposal and one by one, they're either eaten or killed. Throw in a few hapless civilians and for what it's worth, that's the whole character cast.

All in all, PYTHON 2 was overwhelmingly enjoyable when compared to the first film. The acting was much better and the story moved, albeit predictable, at a brisk pace with plenty of snake CGI to go around. Yet make no mistake about it, this is still a bad movie. But it is, unlike the first, one of those giant animal monster movies that's good because it is bad. I dropped five bucks on it on DVD and I'm not disappointed in my purchase. I suppose the third film in this giant snake franchise is next on the list, BOA VS PYTHON.

3. VENOMOUS - It's a miracle! Compared to the previous two I've already mentioned, this movie is just excellent. And it's also the closest thing to being a regular movie-type movie too even though the subject matter concerns animals attacking people.

TREAT WILLIAMS stars as a small town doctor (there's that small town again) who's recent rash of patients are coming in showing signs of having something like the Ebola Virus. As it turns out, the rattle snake population has been stirred up by the recent earthquakes and they're looking to take some anger out on us humans. But what's more troubling is that these snakes are left over secret military experiments (there goes that secret military again) who escaped their cages years ago. And their bite gives you that nasty looking Ebola Virus which can spread like the common flu.

So, in a nutshell, VENOMOUS is just like that DUSTIN HOFFMAN movie, OUTBREAK but with snakes instead of cute little monkeys. In fact, there's a-plenty of rip offs from that film that I can refer to. There's the innocent small town ravaged by the unknown virus that's been put under martial law by the army. The main star has recently seperated from his wife but you just know they're gonna get back together after everyone's been cured. There's the nutty military head honcho that wants to firebomb the whole town to keep his virus weapon a secret. And of course, the animal (snakes in this case) that carries around the deadly virus as well as the antidote.

But no matter what's said about VENOMOUS, it actually turned out to be a pretty good movie, in my opinion. Given that it's budget wasn't much, it honestly made a nice stab at being something other than B-movie trash about killer snakes. Five dollars well spent, I must say.

Others from the Wal-Mart five dollar bin...

THE BONE SNATCHER - a South African horror movie about killer ants that collect human bones and when they all merge together, they form up into humanoid shapes and devour people. And NO, it's not nearly as dumb as it sounds. It was actually pretty decent and the "ant-monster bone-creature" was damn scary looking. Definitely worth the five bucks I dropped on it.

CHUD - Ah, the joys of the 80's. Get prepared for the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers! It's certainly an outdated flick (and it shows too with the bad clothes and wonky haircuts) but Anchor Bay's DVD makes the movie look probably the best it's ever gonna look. Even if it didn't really need to look so good either, right? Yet unfortunately, after a recent viewing, it's not quite as cool as I remembered it all those years ago. Cheezy "drink alot of beer while watching" fun.

ANATOMY - A rather mainstream German horror "Who Dunnit?" type of flick with some surprisingly graphic gore, unwelcomed male nudity, and awesome corpse makeup and special effects (those so-called "displays" were increadibly creepy looking, I shit you not). And better still, it also stars uber sexy fraulein, FRANKA POTENTE (from Run Lola Run) too. She's worth the price of the DVD alone.

CONTAGION - the cheaper-than-cheap DVD distributor Platinum Disc will shovel out some bargain basement DVD's, no doubt about that. This low budget action / suspense film stars two personal favs of mine, BRUCE "Babylon 5" BOXLEITNER as the American president who's been infected with the Ebola Virus given to him by terrorists led by, drum roll please, none other than Herbert West himself, JEFFREY "Re-Animator" COMBS. It's a race against time to save the president and prevent the outbreak. Certainly a Sunday afternoon Sci-Fi Channel movie if I've ever seen one.

FLESH FOR THE BEAST - a "Shriek Show" exclusive and a pretty lousy film all in all. However, in it's benefit, there's lots and lots of nudity to make up for it being a righteously bad movie. So that's something to be said there. It reminds me of old school FRED OLEN RAY or DAVID DECOTEAU gore / skin, scream queen infested flicks like Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama , Bad Girls From Mars, and Evil Toons. Yet as I said, if there's a bright spot to be had here, there's a-plenty of exposed female flesh and the constant nude succubus chicks make the film.

I'm shocked. In my internet travels, I've browsed various message boards (ie: Creature Corner, ComiCon, some Blog boards, horror film Hyperboards, etc) and as expected, not everyone always enjoys the same movie but there's usually much more praise for HOUSE than dejections. Heck, even here at HORROR EXPRESS, there's many more fans of the film than those that hate it.

But I will agree with you that those who don't like the film are quite outspoken about it and display deep hatred, animosity, and contempt for it. And I just can't figure out why. I think it's a great film and it's exactly what it's meant to be... Rob Zombie's music video homage to the whole TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE genre.

Here's hoping that THE DEVIL'S REJECTS (the House sequel) is just as good.

Worst first...."Blastfighter" is uncut, not that there is anything to cut. Very dull. About 8 minutes of 'good' action in the whole film near the end. A real damp squib of an ending and an annoying 'i will not commit violence' hero.

Now then..."Forced Entry" I am in the middle of watching. VERY 70's. Full of the unflattering close-ups of very hairy bollocks shaking away and the closest of close-ups of bodily parts. BUT...there is a real warped power here in the way violent sexual assault, shown in a hardcore sex context, is mixed with actual newsreel footage of war and atrocity in Vietnam. It really does push the limits of any kind of rspectability, but as a slice of true 70's extremity and as an example of an actual shot on film movie that would never see the light of day today..let alone get a cinema release...it's essential viewing.
Review in progress...

"Looking Glass" is one i have wanted to find uncut since i saw the butchered '18' years ago. This is an absolute gem of hardcore. A valid and interesting supernatural movie in it's own right that just happens to have depreaved, deviant hardcore sex to crank up the power of the whole thing.
Demonic seduction is mixed with a nightmarishred hued, sexually deviant, desert Hell. A truly warped and deranged slice of cinema.

Too bad about BLASTFIGHTER, but finding a bad Lamberto movie (THE OGRE, GRAVEYARD DISTURBANCE) is sadly often easier to find than a good one (DEMONS, A BLADE IN THE DARK).

As for FORCE ENTRY - 70s Vietnam footage? Sounds like it's one of those rare films that tries to be brutal and political above even the adult factor. Which means it sounds interesting.

They have their own ASIAN CULT CINEMA label so that's probably what you're talking about. They've released EVIL DEAD TRAP, ENTRAILS OF A VIRGIN, GUTS OF A BEAUTY, STACY, and WILD ZERO among others.

"Death Wish 3" -Silly film that is a lon way from the serious original, but it's fun.

"Once Upon a Time in America" - Leone! Woods! De Niro! Great 2 disc treat

"Shiner"- Caine in top OTT form in a film so over the top in itself you can't help but enjoy the foul mouthed violence.

and DVD rips of VHS transfers....

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie - Saw someones avatar on thr ruemorgue forums, had a vague recollection of renting it as a kid, baught it off ebay.

Monster Squad - The same ebay seller as above had this, and I really can't recall ever seeing it, so I figured I should see it as it's something a lot of people love from their childhood.

No, really. I'm certainly not trying to preach here. I mean, I damn sure don't have a problem buying bootleg DVD's (it's the ONLY way to see some movies) but outright blatant downloading without any intentions of buying the flick on DVD is the ultimate big no-no in many people's books. I think it should only be used to "preview" the film you may have plans of buying on DVD. I've done that before myself.

Tru Calling S1 box set, bought yesterday. Don't know the show that well, just bought it for Ms Dushku. Pilot seems okay, not great, not awful. Eliza runs a lot. :)

Other recent purchases:

Simpsons S4 - Pure genius.

The Deadly Spawn - Proof that I smoked waaaay too much pot in the 80s: I used to think this was kind of a good movie. That impression has now been corrected.

New Avengers 76 box set - Even more fun than I remembered. The good ones are the equal of anything done in the Rigg or Thorsen eras. Especially the Thorsen era.

Freaks And Geeks - Not, despite the title, a horror show. Well, it is, but it's about the real life horror that most of us would still prefer to forget: high school! Possibly the best high school show I've ever seen, and certainly the most accurate one since DAZED AND CONFUSED. I graduated the same year as these fictional seniors, 1980. Like everyone else I missed this show when it aired originally. Bought the box based solely on the reviews and it turned out to be a good move. My biggest problem is that at this rate I'll be done with the whole thing in a week or two, and there ain't no more where that came from. otoh I've never been so grateful to be a grownup.

Got the last 2 items at deepdiscountdvd during their last sale. With the extra 20% discount they cost me slightly less than half of list price. I didn't mind taking a gamble on F&G for a mere 33 bucks, and now I'm glad I did. Avengers was around $38, not too bad for a box I could buy at Tower for $80 (!).

Oh man, how could I forget to mention THE DEADLY SPAWN?! I also just recently bought the DVD with the expectation that it'll be as good as it was all those many years ago when I first saw it.

Remember that supra-cool oversized VHS box it came in? Those were the days, huh?

As for the movie's experience for me now, well, it's no doubt ultra-cheezy but still, there's never been an alien with that many teeth in it's maw. And the blood (in abundance too, I might add) is a glorious vivid red and quite watery so that's gotta count for something there.

But yeah, it's not nearly as "cool" as it was back then but hey, I'm still glad I own it on DVD, and looking better than it ever has before (assuming that's a good thing).

Great Supercool. But I do warn you about Misty in DRACULA, she is typically A LOT better. It's really the only time I've seen where she's so prone to overacting.

If you're getting SPIDER-BABE that's a good parody of the original flick with a lot of skin of course.

As for the HALLOWEEN thing. I like the fourth installment okay, but they should have left Myers dead at the end of part two. HALLOWEEN III was a step in the right direction but people wanted to keep seeing the same guy get up over and over again. Everything since then has been a cash-in.

in total agreement with you there Shaun of the Dead is one of the funniest films ive ever seen, i was really impressed by the way they included some of the theories from Georges films to explain why the dead were rising. If you think about it SHAUN is more of a spin off rather than piss take. DAWN (original) was the situation in Pittsburgh and SHAUN was the situation in London very clever film

Finally saw SHAUN OF THE DEAD last night and you're all right, it was quite enjoyable. A very funny and surprisingly gore filled flick with great zombie makeup. But oh my, Shaun's girlfriend Liz (actress Kate Ashfield), wow, what a babe!

However (I know this may cause a fuss), I didn't think it was the "end-all-be-all" zombie film everyone's made it out to be. And many have compared it to the new DAWN OF THE DEAD remake for some reason. But really, I don't think you can. They're two totally different films. It would be better to maybe compare SHAUN to another wacky zombie romp and that would be Peter Jackson's DEAD ALIVE (aka BRAIN DEAD) which I personally liked better.

All in all though, SHAUN OF THE DEAD is a definite keeper.

It's an R1 disc, so you shouldn't have a problem with finding it.
Over here it was always called "Salute of the Jugger", but it's called "Blood of Heroes" (I dont know whether that was the American name? I pressume it was). You can it new from Amazon marketplace seller for £3.99, so it's cheap.

I used to really like Blind Fury aswell! Haven't seen it in ages, but, yes, thinking about it I guess it problem was at least influenced by Zatoichi. Looking on IMDB, it seems it was.

I just looked on amazon and you can only get it in a (R1) double feature 'Omega Doom/Blind Fury'.

Oh man, good early Hong Kong gangster stuff. The "roots" of the genre, if you will. Even though it's a dated product, I thought the first film was just excellent, in all manners of the word. It was also my first EKIN CHENG flick too. The second movie deals mainly with the character of "Chicken" (actor JORDAN CHAN) and his side story but don't let that fool ya, it instantly makes you love the guy when it's all said and done.

I've repeatedly heard that the third film is the best of the series. I had a DVD of it once but it was a dubbed Mandarin language only copy and I couldn't stand it. I got rid of it without finishing it and I have yet to find an original Cantonese language version on DVD. If you ever come across one, PLEEEZE let me know.

Oh man, good early Hong Kong gangster stuff. The "roots" of the genre, if you will.

Never actually seen them, i had started to drop out of HK stuff by then after a period of non-stop fanaticism. They were very cheap so i thought i'd give them a go.

Then no doubt, you've probably already seen their sort of film formula before...

1. A gang of young tuffs trying to raise in ranks in the triad.
2. Classic HK male bonding and camaraderie.
3. Gangsters with "honor" vs deceit and treachery.
4. Steadfast loyalty of the group to the very end, whatever that may be.

Still though, they're familiar ground but ya know, some themes never get old or overused. And the YOUNG AND DANGEROUS series is one of them.

I just wish some studio would buy the rights to these films and release a better DVD presentation of them. The import MEI AH DVD's I have are pretty shitty, (no anamorphic widescreen and mono-stereo surround sound only).

Picked up these DVD's at a video rental store's cheapo $5 bin...

1. Deep Shock - Ya just gotta love this one! Giant electric eels from outer space attack lotsa scientific folks in an underwater lab. Nuff said, right?

2. Zero Woman: The Accused - Yet another entry into the infamous Japanese "Girls-With-Guns" genre. Bad acting and cheezy effects, but slutty J-gals kicking butt make up for all that!

3. Gone Dark - Sexy Claire Forlani plays an undercover detective who crosses the line, gets hooked on drugs, and embraces the "Dark Side".

I enjoyed it a lot. Very watchable, and just a fun b-movie. Consindering it's the 4th in a series of movies, and a prequel, it should have been terrible. But, I thought it was great fun.

Hey Raventt,

Yup! I'm a martial arts movie nut. I got my username from a martial arts movie by Lau Kar Leung, called SPIRITUAL BOXER. Well, ever since Celestial Pictures started to remaster the old Shaw Bros. movies, it has been a dream come true for martial arts fans. You could find these films over at Yesasia.com for 14.99 without tax, but you do need to pay for shipping. Here are a few that I recommend:

8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER
MARTIAL CLUB
MY YOUNG AUNTIE
MARTIAL ARTS OF SHAOLIN
HUMAN LANTERNS
LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA
HOLY FLAME OF THE MARTIAL WORLD
ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN TRILOGY
THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN
RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN
DISCIPLES OF THE 36TH CHAMBER

and the list goes on. Let me know if you need any more recommendations and I will be glad to help. Here is a link for Yesasia where you could find these movies.

Hey Supercool,

Yeah! I thought so too. I never heard about this Tsui Hark film, and I've watched alot of his movies, even THE BUTTERFLY MURDERS. When it came out, I was surprised, especially when I found out that it was made in the early 80's.
When I got a chance to watch it, I was shocked and impressed at how gory and entertaining it was. The martial arts wasn't bad either, and Norman Chu did a great job as the main hero. Overall, I thought it was an excellent Tsui Hark film.

I haven't seen many of Tsui Hark's (I've been meaning to catch up on his back catalogue) films in a while (with the exception of the fairly awful The Legend of Zu). WERE GOING TO EAT YOU was a genuinely great flick, definately high in the ranks of horror-comedys (one of my favs). I was suprised by the martial arts aswell. there was some pretty fun stuff in there. Though the use of the Susperia music was a bit odd!

Yup! Yesasia is a good place to find asian films. I remember another horror film called KOLOBOS. The soundtrack for that film was very similar to the one that the Goblins did for SUSPIRIA. Maybe it was a homage, but KOLOBOS, I thought was a pretty good horror flick, with some nice gore and atmosphere.

Author Chuck Pfarrer explained in an interview that the comic book was based on the script that he wrote in the early-90s. Because of the special effects that the script called for, it was impossible to make the script into a movie at that time, and he handed it to Dark Horse Comics who published it in 1995. Glad you liked it, wish I could say the same. Keep in mind that I've only watched it the once, and I'll admit I was a bit tired, but it seemed obnoxiously filmed and edited. The action was horrid, very boring to see a bunch of beautiful people battering zombies with martial arts. It all seemed a bit pointless, seeing as how Alice was able to kung fu kick zombie dogs to death before whatevers been done to her. Just a case of, there isn't any challenge in it, so it's not even exciting seeing her face the big guy, and it's just silly seeing her run down the side of a building. Too, erm, Matrix-y. And, this may seem minor but boy does it annoy me, the slowmo effect used when you saw zombie doing their business put me riggghhhht off. Overall, it felt like any other dumb action movie primarily geared towards teens. And, well, I'm a fan of the games, and zombies, but I sure ain't a fan of dumb hollywood action BS *shrugs* But, I'll be giving it another go sometime soon. DotD2004 was a badly made movie, but it worked and is an enjoyable zombie movie, this just didn't cut the mustard.

well one thing try not to think of it as a zombie film because, like you side, it doesnt cut it. Its just an enjoyable action film, i thought the slow motion on the zombies as they moved throughout the alley ways of raccoon city was really effect and added some tension to the film, i was also impressed by how they reconstructed a scene from RE 3 the game, you know where all the cop cars pull up and the cops prepare to take on the mass of undead. And every scene where the nemesis was in i thought was beautifully done, ok he was over armed the rocket launcher i could appreciate but the machine gun!.

I aslo agree that DOTD2004 worked better than RE APOCALYPSE in some respects but in others RE 2 is just the better film in terms of how much it kept my interest. DOTD started well the first 10 mins were very good, but then it drifted off and became dull. RE 2 never lost track and didnt drift into things that were completely irrelivent. I know alot of people thought RE 2 could have been a hell of alot better and fair enough yes it could have but Alexander Witt did a much better job than Paul Anderson did with the first RESIDENT EVIL.

Ah, okay. Yeah, that's the same one I have. I was just curious though because some of the Asian releases are said to be extremely cool with DTS soundtracks, special packaging, and include extra items like cards, figures, mini-posters, that kinda stuff. I thought you might have bought one of those.

"Ninja Dragon" - Cheap as cheap thing DVD of yet another cut 'n' paste slice of craziness from Godfrey Ho and his much exploitated actor of cheap choic Richard Harrison.

"Kansas City Confidential" - 1950's noirish thriller starring the great Neville Brand, Jack Elam and a very young (and hairy) Lee Van Cleef, on yet another cheap as a cheap thing DVD.

"God Told Me Too" - Cheapy release of Larry Cohen's unusual horror/sci-fi thriller.

From the popular $5 WAL-MART discount bin comes...

FRAILTY - one of Bill Paxton's best roles.

SLEEPWALKERS - a shitty Stephen King flick but it has Alice Krige and she's cool. She was the "Borg Queen" from STAR TREK and that's gotta count for something.

SCARECROW / SCARECROW 2: SLAYER - a double feature combo DVD of bad horror movies. I've always thought scarecrows were right damn spooky though and there's just not enough horror movies with them.

Just ordered offa EBAY...

NEW POLICE STORY (aka Police Story 5) - Jackie Chan's newer Hong Kong made flick.

FACE - a great looking Korean horror movie.

THE TWINS EFFECT 2 - ah, The Twins... nuff said!

R-POINT - a promising Korean war movie with a horror twist, kinda like THE BUNKER and DEATHWATCH.

The Bone Snatcher (Seems to have been a mix up, and instead of a refund, I got a replacement sent back to me. I'll be keeping it sealed, so I can phone Play.com up to see if they'll take it back and give me that refund, lord knows I wanted my money back after watching it the first time.)

If the one you're talking about is the DVD release by TOKYO SHOCK, then it's not the extended 130-minute version that I was refering to on your VERSUS post down in THE CHOPHOUSE.

This is the only official release of the VERSUS ULTIMATE EDITION by Geneon listed > HERE (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-aa-70-4k4.html) <. But alas, it doesn't have English subtitles. It is however available on EBAY as a fansubbed bootleg though.

That's cool, but it did nothing for me. I love Stiller, and co, but Dodgeball felt very stale. I wasn't going to blast it for the premise, because I figured it would be a simple vehicle for some great comedy, but the great comedy never came. Shame, but I'm glad you liked it.
