View Full Version : Dog Soliders Sequel News

News of the DOG SOLIDERS sequel has met with mixed reactions. Some are just thrilled to see it made and can't wait to see how the furballs give the soldiers a fight that makes Nicaragua look like a paintball match. Others, including some who didn't care for the original (I’m looking at you, John), are unnerved by early comments that some producers found the original "too British" (In a British film, imagine that!). It has gotten a small but substantial thumbs-down vote in our ancient poll. Whatever the case, it looks like the sequel will be open for debate a while longer as the film has been pushed back.

DOG SOLDIERS II: RAW MEAT (a slight change from the earlier FRESH MEAT title) is due to start shooting in early 2004 and aims for a release in the first quarter of 2005. That's a bit longer than most were expecting, but it is moving ahead. Neil Marshall, who wrote and directed the original will merely serve as a producer on the second outing. Marshall told Filmrot and Hot Dog magazine that the project will again involve werewolves, but he's being very mum about the plot, revealing only that Kevin McKidd will return, it takes place immediately after the first film, involves DNA and the sheepdog from the original. And while I've got some connect-the-dots suspicions, the fact is that could mean anything.

Still, you've got to wonder about what might have been. Originally, Marshall had planned a trilogy with different monsters each time. The second film was to involve a pack of vamps and the third, "Frankenstein-like zombies." Apparantly, this idea has been shelved. The official reason is that the upcoming big-budget film VAN HELSING will already be tackling vamps and Frank monsters. But since that film is coming out in 2004, wouldn't the natural idea to create something slightly original that nonetheless capitalizes on the success of the bigger and anticipated film? I mean, I haven't graduated from the School of Exploitation Filmmaking, but isn't that strategy covered on day one? Oh well, maybe they're going for original... which is why they are doing werewolves again. Hmm. Nope, I have no idea where the hell they're going with this one, folks.

Oh well, onwards and upwards. Marshall is tackling a new project called THE OUTPOST. Actually, sources say that it's a revised version of the original DOG SOLDIERS III treatment. According to Filmrot: "He states it is a unique take on the horror genre with an oil rig in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean getting attacked by 50 'speedy, blood hungry, balls-to-the-wall' zombies when a boat crashes into it. With radios down, a storm cutting them off and no one to rely on but themselves, the staff of the oil rig tool themselves up and fight back."

Sounds nifty. In my book, I'm hoping for more DOG SOLDIERS magic and not, say, HOUSEBOAT OF THE DEAD. According to Marshall, distributors are chomping at the bit for this one, so let's hope that's the case.

In truth it did exactly what I said it would at the end of the review. It grew on me.

I blame most of my initial reaction to me not knowing it was an overtly tongue in cheek take on the Werewolf genre.
If you want to look at someone who thinks the film is definitely overated then look at Steve.

Oh and talking of Ancient Polls, we could do with a new one.
Anyone (come one, come all) with an idea?
(I'll even credit you in the Poll)

[Members will be able to submit their polls directly on the mainpage as soon as I code that bit]

Oh, I am looking at Steve. For those unaware, John's review wasn't even all that bad. It was just that he was underwhelmed and lots of people have been stunned by this harmless little fact... something I enjoy playing on. Oh, it's all in good fun, buddy. No worries. :D

As for contests, I'm just thrilled we have over 800 votes. Really thanks to everyone who took part.

But yes, a new one would be nice. Same for quotes, which I have been lazy as all get-out on.

Yeah 800 votes huh? It's amazing I guess to those of us who've been around here since LAST year. But, as much as I love a Poll with 800 votes, it needs a change.

The best my addled brain has been able to come up with, as it's nearing the end of the Year, is a very inspiring "Horror Movie of the Year?" Poll.
I bet that knocks you over with originality huh? :)
I guess we could give it a short run until the beginning of next year.

So what about some contenders?

FREDDY Vs JASON
CABIN FEVER
HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES
UNDERWORLD
TCM REMAKE
HOUSE OF THE DEAD (OK, I'm kidding on this one :P )

Any better ideas?
Give me some input guys and gals!

the only other thing i can think of is a "What film are you anticipating the most in the coming year" poll

next year we will have
Hellboy
Cursed
Alien Vs Predator
Blade Trinity
Ginger Snaps 2
House of 1000 Corpses 2 B)

well you get the idea. i am going to bed now with the humbling reality of my idea sucking. oh well......

I think either one of those poll ideas is great.

But John, you'd have to include IDENTITY with that list. My vote for the best and most overlooked horror film of the year. GOTHIKA I guess is also attracting some fans, although I admit I haven't made it to that one yet.

Yeah I like the idea Caleb.

Tell you what, we can actually run them both. The one I suggested now we can run until the very beginning of next year. And yours we can run as ""What film are you anticipating the most THIS year".
We'd need a poll for early next year anyway, and this is ideal. :)

Duly noted Scott.

I actually hadn't heard you rave much about IDENTITY (I've yet to see it) and I must concur that it is a film that hasn't gathered much attention, other than me hearing a number of people say how good it was.

I'll get this Poll up probably tomorrow guys, and Caleb's in a month. I've actually been sick as hell today, so this is just a flying visit.

Thanks mate.
I actually expect to make a quick recovery hopefully. Strange thing is it's not a Cold/Flu (which I always seem to get) but some weird headache/nausea deal. Not good. But I don't react well to any form of illness anyway. :dummy:

Well usually I post from my work PC or home PC. When I post at another computer I forget to log in because I am used to not having to. It is my fault.

Elated. As far as Dog soldiers being "too British" that was one of it's elements I appreciated most. As a yank, I am thrilled by the great quality of British Horror. My only complaint is that there is not near enough of it! :(
