News of the DOG SOLIDERS sequel has met with mixed reactions. Some are just thrilled to see it made and can't wait to see how the furballs give the soldiers a fight that makes Nicaragua look like a paintball match. Others, including some who didn't care for the original (I’m looking at you, John), are unnerved by early comments that some producers found the original "too British" (In a British film, imagine that!). It has gotten a small but substantial thumbs-down vote in our ancient poll. Whatever the case, it looks like the sequel will be open for debate a while longer as the film has been pushed back.
DOG SOLDIERS II: RAW MEAT (a slight change from the earlier FRESH MEAT title) is due to start shooting in early 2004 and aims for a release in the first quarter of 2005. That's a bit longer than most were expecting, but it is moving ahead. Neil Marshall, who wrote and directed the original will merely serve as a producer on the second outing. Marshall told Filmrot and Hot Dog magazine that the project will again involve werewolves, but he's being very mum about the plot, revealing only that Kevin McKidd will return, it takes place immediately after the first film, involves DNA and the sheepdog from the original. And while I've got some connect-the-dots suspicions, the fact is that could mean anything.
Still, you've got to wonder about what might have been. Originally, Marshall had planned a trilogy with different monsters each time. The second film was to involve a pack of vamps and the third, "Frankenstein-like zombies." Apparantly, this idea has been shelved. The official reason is that the upcoming big-budget film VAN HELSING will already be tackling vamps and Frank monsters. But since that film is coming out in 2004, wouldn't the natural idea to create something slightly original that nonetheless capitalizes on the success of the bigger and anticipated film? I mean, I haven't graduated from the School of Exploitation Filmmaking, but isn't that strategy covered on day one? Oh well, maybe they're going for original... which is why they are doing werewolves again. Hmm. Nope, I have no idea where the hell they're going with this one, folks.
Oh well, onwards and upwards. Marshall is tackling a new project called THE OUTPOST. Actually, sources say that it's a revised version of the original DOG SOLDIERS III treatment. According to Filmrot: "He states it is a unique take on the horror genre with an oil rig in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean getting attacked by 50 'speedy, blood hungry, balls-to-the-wall' zombies when a boat crashes into it. With radios down, a storm cutting them off and no one to rely on but themselves, the staff of the oil rig tool themselves up and fight back."
Sounds nifty. In my book, I'm hoping for more DOG SOLDIERS magic and not, say, HOUSEBOAT OF THE DEAD. According to Marshall, distributors are chomping at the bit for this one, so let's hope that's the case.
