View Full Version : Question on Alien 3

I was reading an article on the Alien Quadrilogy to see if it would be worth slapping down the $$ on. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I have the previous box set which I will probably trade off if I pick up the quadrilogy. Anywho, I was reading that David Fincher did not take part in the Quadrilogy. He was the only one that did not have involvement out of all of the movies. The Alien 3 'director cut' did not even involve him(according to the fango article). I am probably asking a completely stupid question, but has Fincher abandoned the film? Just from reading the article he seems to have some kind of pessimistic attitude towards the film. Aliens 3 was way better than the generic sci fi 4th installment. If anyone should be sore it seems to me it would be Giger. He had to fight to receive any credits on the later installments of the film. They even ripped his design off on the 3rd installment and did not want to give him credit. You can read about all that on Giger's website though. Let me know if you can help me out. I love the series but am not an expert.

Hi Caleb.
Before the *informed* opinions arrive, I'll give you mine. :P
What you said is what I've read too.
Fincher declined to be involved in creating a Director's Cut for the project. But he *did* give his blessing to the Special Edition, which is on the disk as well as the Original Cut. It clocks in 30 minutes longer and basically has all the footage that was excised from the origian version (scenes and subplots). Special effects have been added where needed.
Now that's what I've read. So don't take it as gospel either. I neither have the Quadrilogy, nor am an expert on the film.
Oh, and BTW happy 22nd Birthday!! :teeth:
I've got 10 years on you young man! :p

The new cut of "A3" is actually very good. And we at last see what happened to Paul McGann's character who simply vanished in the Theatrical Cut.
Still not sure about the Alien coming from an Ox though! A dog seemed to be more in line with the Alien's design and speed.
My biggest beef is that they did not enhance the CGI/matte effects on the Alien. It still lokks TRULY awful in places. And it changes sizes all the time. the man in suit is not the same size as the pupet and the CGI thing is not the same size as either of them. And it looks abysmal when the CGI creature is clinging to thinks and interacting with real objects. The fuckling thing turns green!!! Horrible.
Still an underrated film though.

Far as I know Fincher shit on it at first, but over the yrs he warmed up to it.
FWIW, the extended version is way better. My only beefs wit it are the ox birth not bein as good as the dog birth. That and the ending don't have the queen's birth as Ripley dies.
Other than that it's the shit. More of Clemens' relationship wit Ripley. More of Dillon's speeches, which I really enjoyed. More about the company's scheme to get the aliens. The guys who are just extras in the regular cut get more screen time too. The whole bit wit Golic goin crazy and freeing the alien after they trap it is good too.
