Mark called Mickey on the two-way and asked him if they were having any luck. He reported that they had tracked the beast to a wood pile and were waiting for it to emerge. He then asked him if he would let them know the moment they made any progress. It wasn’t long before a pack of dogs had picked up the scent. They came running through the woods barking and tracked the scent straight to the wood pile. The four dogs ran around the pile trying to hone in on their prey. One got bold and went into the pile where the tracks led. He stuck his head into the pile and froze for a second. Only his tail and back legs were exposed. Then there was a loud commotion and the pile seemed to come to life. The curious dog was jerked into the pile with tremendous force; it disappeared letting out a horrifying scream. The entire wood pile shook violently. The other dogs stopped and stared. Then, the dogs head emerged from the brush. It was still crying and yelping loudly fighting to get out of the brush pile. Its head and neck were torn to shreds and covered in blood. Mickey and Jeff looked at each other with wide eyes. Then the dog was ripped back into the brush pile and after a few more blood curdling screams, the air went silent. A loud growl came from the pile and the last three dogs took off like a bolt of lightning. They did not even take time to look back for their friend. Jeff raised the rifled up to his shoulder as a mass of fur backed its way out of the wood pile. When he thought he had enough of its body exposed he took aim and fired.

Bitten and Stolen by Kelley Armstrong are pretty good. I'd also second the Anita Blake novels (the earlier ones though).

ANIMALS by John Skipp and Craig Spector. Kind of the Lost Boys of werewolf classics, but without the kids.

Book of the Beast trilogy by Robert Stallman
The Orphan
The werewolf is a creature of the night, a solitary, fur-covered thing. A wild-eyed, five clawed beast with a taste for blood and the soft crunch of bone between the teeth. But as little Robert, the werewolf has been adopted by a kindly farmer and his wife. Neither Robert nor the monster could control the shifting of its form, and always, the emerged beast lurked within, ready to spring for the throat.

The Beast
The Beast has become a man and is heading towards his final goal. As a child he hunted the frightened night creatures, left a musky trail and tore flesh from splintered bones. But the Beast has invaded the bodies of several people. Now, as Barry, he has a wife and young family to protect. A chance meeting with a beautiful young Indian leads him to a Navajo reservation where he discovers the astounding possibility of the Great Leap which will take them both into another dimension. The Beast needs to go. Barry the man has to stay.

Amazon review:
There are twenty-two talented authors included in this outstanding collection of werewolf stories. But the real prize is finding a Cheri Scotch story related to her very hard to find werewolf trilogy. My favorite story, though, is "Dumpster Diving" about finding an abandoned puppy in the dumpster and in the morning being faced with the task of caring for a baby. These are not, for the most part, slash and gore werewolf horror stories. Instead, these are a fine collection of thought provoking stories that are a real treat to those of us who wonder "what if...".
