Anchor Bay is being sold by its parent company for a reported $ 60 million. Anchor Bay is the DVD company that first released such notable horror classics as SUSPIRIA, ZOMBIE, PHENOMENA, HELLRAISER, THE BEYOND, MANIAC, THE HILLS HAVE EYES and HALLOWEEN, just to name a few.
There is no news over who the likely buyers for AB are. Fortunately, Anchor Bay isn't letting a little thing like getting bought out dampen their spirits or their release schedule. They are planning on releasing DAWN OF THE DEAD twice next year - once in a single-disc Divimax format (that's the hi-def format they used with their recent re-issues). The next will be a two or three disc set featuring the theatrical cut, the director's cut and possibly the Argento European cut. This doesn't mean much for people already in Europe, but for the States is big stuff. It will also contain tons of extras that are still being ironed out. AB is also still releasing CHEERLEADER CAMP, the MIRROR MIRROR COLLECTION, THE TALES OF BEATRIX POTTER, THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND, a killer two-disc TIME BANDITS set and the remaining HERCULES and XENA episodes. And that's just the U.S. releases.
So, looks like it shouldn't bother AB too much. This is the second major shift for the company. William Lustig, although still working occasionally with the company, left Anchor Bay to form Blue Underground in 2002. Many older AB titles have shifted over to Blue Underground for further restoration.
Thanks to Creature Corner and DVD File for the info.
