Thursday was Thanksgiving in the USA, a time to give thanks, watch the NFL and stuff yourself bigger than the guy from that old Monty Python sketch. But while everyone else in America was celebrating, novelist Stephen King was recovering in a hospital bed from pneumonia.

King is up and around and in "good spirits." He is expected to make a full recovery. He was diagnosed with pnemonia in the right lung shortly before a trip to recieve a National Book Award for lifetime achievement. When he returned to Maine, he discovered the pneumonia had spread to his left lung as well.

The pneumonia is believed to be another lasting side effect of the accident King suffered a few years ago. In 1999, King was walking by his home when he was struck by a van. He suffered a broken hip, leg and ribs and punctured a lung. The punctured lung has left a great deal of scar tissue, doctors say, which has led to a vulnerability to certain illnesses, including pneumonia.

King checked himself into the hospital on Sunday. On Tuesday, he has surgery to remove scar tissue and fluid from the lung. He is expected to stay for a few more days.

A statement from King's spokesperson, Warren Silver reads: "Stephen and his family ask only for good wishes and prayers, and at this time, when we celebrate the bounty of our country, that we remember those who are in need."

King had recently announced his retirement, with the remaining Dark Tower novels to be his last published work for a while. The latest, WOLVES OF CALLA was released a few weeks ago.

We here at Horror Express wish King a speedy recovery. The world needs it's evil geniuses, Steve. Don't let the sickness get you down.
