God, I love David Lynch. He's one of the few filmmakers who constantly challenges himself and his audience. There's no doubting the man is bizarre but it is an artist's weirdness open to endless interpretation. I was so pleased with myself when I felt I fully grasped LOST HIGHWAY (think: vortexes) but I admit I'll need to see MULHOLLAND DRIVE one or two more times before I grasp that one. He creates entire communities around his productions and is very hands-on, even down to making some of the furniture that appears in his films. Even when Lynch has dissapointed, he has never ceased to be fascinating.
Now, Aint It Cool News is reporting another bold move for the director... in the direction of children's entertainment.
At the Stockholm Film Festival, Lynch was asked about ever helming an animated film. The answer was an emphatic, "yes!" Lynch has written a script called SNOOTWORLD that he hopes would be a CG animated film.
Hey, why not? Tim Burton did a fine job with writing and producing THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. Clive Barker is currently getting raves for ABARAT, his series of young adult paperbacks. Also, CG animation is the way to go these days, with FINDING NEMO (actually, a great film!) cementing the deal.
Lynch also accepted an award from Pernilla August and said that he would not handle a director's cut of DUNE. As the article puts it:
"Lynch had mentioned that it was the only project he felt was a failure, and said that to have to spend more than 6 months recreating a project he felt he had sold out on from almost the beginning, would only feel like a bigger failure."
No news on when SNOOTWORLD will see the light of day, if ever. Keep in mind, Lynch has had a number of projects fall apart and struggles to get funding for many projects. He has been campaigning for his RONNIE ROCKET feature for decades.
Whatever Lynch decides on, you can bet on it being unlike anything else out there. And that alone is worth celebrating.
