Now see, this is the type of news I just love reporting. It combines exciting new original talents with some untapped and underappreciated talent - all combining into a new and original production (i.e. not a remake or sequel, which has been mostly what we've reported here lately).
Catriona MaColl was the great actress featured in some of Lucio Fulci's most amazing and influential films - CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY and my favorite THE BEYOND (B-movie geeks may also remember her from HAWK THE SLAYER). She was one of the few actresses to somewhat get along with Fulci and still looked back on her work with pride. She recorded the audio commentary for BEYOND with David Warbeck, shortly before he passed away.
MacColl has kept busy over the years but hasn't returned to horror very often since her days with the late Fulci. That all changes with SAINT-ANGE.
Directed by first-timer Pascal Laugier, SAINT ANGE most recently directed the documentries on BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF. Sound strange? It shouldn't. The film is also produced by Christophe Gans and Richard Granpierre, the brains behind WOLF.
SAINT ANGE involves a caretaker (Virginie Ledoyen - DiCaprio's flame in THE BEACH) who witnesses a number of ghostly apparitions in an abandoned orphanage. It's a period piece, taking place around 1960, according to , and MacColl shows up in a supporting role. MacColl and Ledoyen previously collaborated on the Merchant-Ivory film, A SOLDIER'S DAUGHTER NEVER CRIES.
SAINT ANGE has already wrapped production and should be released in France in March. Hopefully, a U.S. and UK release will follow shortly thereafter.
