Oh, get your minds out of the gutter. We haven't made the shift over to porn at Horror Express... well, not yet anyway. Rather, we're talking about the two follow-ups to GINGER SNAPS, the greatest werewolf movie in decades (sorry DOG SOLDIERS, it was close).

reports that Lion's Gate (proud new owners of Artisan Entertainment) has given these hotly anticipated films names.

In GINGER SNAPS: UNLEASHED (get it?), Ginger's sister returns infected with the curse of lycanthropy. As she tries to fight her furriness, she is hunted down by a male werewolf who wants to cuddle up with this new female wolfchild.

Then, we go further back for the prequel, titled GINGER SNAPS BACK. In that film, we go back to the beginning to find out how the wereolf curse spread in the first place.

Both films sound very different from the original but should prove to be very entertaining nonetheless. GINGER SNAPS: UNLEASHED and GINGER SNAPS BACK are both slated for release in 2004.

I've been interested in seeing the original GINGER SNAPS movie for some time now. I've heard good things about it all over the web. I'm not sure if it's because there's a gaggle of good looking babes in the film or the fact that the Werewolf Genre has been so lousy over the past decade that ANY half decent werewolf flick is greeted with loving open arms. Can you say, DOG SOLDIERS?!

Anyway, from what I've heard, the R1 DVD (by ARTISAN) is fullframe and cut. So, I gotta ask, what's the best way to see the movie? I've read somewhere that there is a Canadian DVD release that's completely uncut and widescreen. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm in the same boat Steve, been meaning to see GINGER SNAPS for a while. I keep meaning to catch it on it's regular runs on Sci-Fi but don't know if that's a good thing incase it's heavily cut.

Do I also detect that you don't dig DOG SOLDIERS (http://www.horrorexpress.com/filmreview.php?id=31)?!
If so "Wow" that definitely puts you in the minority of horror fans I've heard from. It's not like I raved about the brilliance of it, but I thought it was a pretty cool film. I went into watching it, before I'd heard anything about it, believing it was a completely serious take on the "Soldiers fighting Werewolves" angle. I think that slightly spoiled my first viewing. But I think now I can appreciate it more for what it is than what it isn't.
The Rumours (http://www.horrorexpress.com/news.php?id=221) of what they intend to do with the sequel, in addition to ditching the Writer/Director, are truly disturbing for any fan of the film.
"Americanisation" strikes again! :spike:

But yeah I wait to see if GINGER SNAPS lives up to the moderate amount of hype I've seen for it. IIRC Scott prefers it to DOG'?

Read my lips: the Canadian version is the BEST way to see GINGER SNAPS. It was one of the best DVD releases of that entire year. Artisan's on the other hand, was possibly the worst. Artisan did such a shoddy job with that and Argento's SLEEPLESS that I was actually glad to hear Lion's Gate bought them out.

It's not exactly like that. DOG SOLDIERS wasn't a bad film but it's certainly NOT a marvel of horror movie-making. In my opinion, it just gets bigger kudos than it deserves. That's all.

Yeah I'm with you on that Steve, for sure.

I thought DOG SOLDIERS was very well made *FOR WHAT IT WAS*. Which was a very entertaining, tongue-in-cheek Werewolf movie. What it wasn't was a movie so brilliant that it single-handedly breathed life into a long dead sub-genre. I think a big part about what made it refreshing, and different, was that it was so English. It was something that just would have been a completely different movie if it had been in the U.S. with an American cast. Something those who are working on the remake seem to be unable to realise.

Not since the days of Hammer has the U.K. made a significant impact on the horror genre. And this is me talking as an Englishman.
28 Days Later also deserves praise for similar reasons.
I just hope that the U.K. can pick up the ball and run with it after getting a good running start with 28 DAYS, and DS. We really need to start putting out a run of quality horror films, just as they are doing in the Far East.

I'm trying to think of any further U.K. horror movies in Production and none spring to mind. It's also a shame that DEATHWATCH wasn't successful. At least I haven't heard much in the way of good things about it in the manner of the aforementioned movies.
