A few years back, there was a film adaptation of Ramsey Campell's novel, THE NAMELESS. All reports say the film is fantastic, some saying it's even better than it's source material. I waited for it to come over to North America, but it didn't. I wonder why.
Oh, here's why. The film is owned by Dimension.
By now, it's now secret how I feel about this company's shady business practices. Every day, I say "Okay, I'll ease off. They have released a couple good films at least. People are probably getting sick of me bitching about this company all the time." But no sooner do I do this than something else comes to my attention. Dimension has a reputation for buying up films and then sitting on them. They've collected tons of action, horror and other cult items from Asia and Europe. They don't know how or when they want to release them, they just don't want anyone beating them to the punch. So, while they twiddle their thumbs and decide whether they want to dust the films off for an eventual release (probably straight-to-video), who do you think suffers? That's right, sparky. It's you and all the other fans out there.
THE NAMELESS was released in it's native Spain way back in 1999! Not only is Dimension sitting on that one, they have also not committed to a release date for director Jaume Balagueró's hotly anticipated follow-up, DARKNESS, already over a year old!
Hopefully Balagueró will get some much-needed respect with THE HORSEMEN, his newest film. reports that the film is being produced by Radar/Platinum Dunes, the Michael Bay production company whose TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake is generating some surprising positive buzz (no pun intended). So far, the plot sounds vague - a cop who discovers he has a "disturbing connection" to a serial killer. But that could just be the tip of the iceberg.
Let's hope it works out for the best. And let's hope Dimension starts releasing some of the films in their vaults.
