Not too many people saw Kurt Wimmer's last film, EQUILIBRIUM and that's too bad. It was not the greatest thing to come along last year, but it was an above average film that combined futuristic action with the dystopian vision of BRAVE NEW WORLD and FARENHEIT 451. But much like , the film was marginalized by the distributor, Dimension.
Here's hoping Wimmer has better luck with his next film, ULTRAVIOLET. The film involves a young woman who must protect a very special boy in a future world, plunged into a human/vampire war (told you UNDERWORLD would have ripples). It is due for release in early 2004. It stars Milla Jovovich (RESIDENT EVIL, JOAN OF ARC) and a youngun by the name of Christian Bright. You will see plenty of this young star as he is also the subject of a new horror film called GODSEND.
Well, that's all well and good, but what the hell is GODSEND? Well, thankfully has the scoop on this film. That includes the poster you see here and a . What is truly interesting is that GODSEND is directed by Nick Hamm. Hamm also had his own horror film, THE HOLE, marginalized by Dimension. This film, which stars Thora Birch, got a release in Europe but nothing in the U.S. It is finally due to make a modest debut on DVD and video, instead of the theatres it was intended for. Part of the reasoning behind this is that THE HOLE also features Keira Knightley from last summer's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. PIRATES you'll recall was released byDisney, which owns Miramax and Dimension. Interesting they didn't try the push for the film's originally scheduled release of 2001 - which would have followed Birch's supporting stint in AMERICAN BEAUTY, which had just taken home the Best Picture Oscar.
[I 150w news-178 I]JoBlo's plot synopsis (with some added actor markers by Horror Express) is as follows:
"Following the death of their eight year old son on his birthday, Jessie (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos - X-MEN 1&2, FEMME FATALE) and Paul (Greg Kinnear - AS GOOD AS IT GETS) are befriended by a doctor on the forefront of genetic research (Robert DeNiro, hopefully in a role befitting his talents) at the height of their mourning. He leads the couple in a desperate attempt to reverse the rules of nature and clone their son. The experiment is successful and under Richard's watchful eye, Adam grows into a healthy and happy young boy, until his 8th birthday.
As time goes by, the Duncans gradually start to see small, subtle differences between the new Adam and the Adam they lost. At the time of the new Adam's eighth birthday, the changes in character are more pronounced. Adam grows distant and fearful as a palpable sense of menace settles within the young boy. This Adam begins to suffer from night terrors and frightening flashbacks as a sinister personality begins to emerge. Paul and Jessie cannot escape the fact that this Adam is different. Terror settles on the couple as they try to come to terms with just what they have done, or what has been done to them."
I don't know about you but this sounds like one hell of a concept for a feature film and personally, I cannot wait.
Hopefully, Hamm's next film GODSEND will prove to be just that. This film has the backing of Lion's Gate, who has given the horror genre plenty to be happy about recently with films like , and my favorite film of the bunch, . ULTRAVIOLET, in the meantime, will be distributed by Screen Gems, the folks behind GHOSTS OF MARS, RESIDENT EVIL and yes... UNDERWORLD.
