I haven't really been following the production of Tobe Hooper's remake of THE TOOLBOX MURDERS. For one, it's hard to keep track of all the remakes. Hence, I didn't lear until now that it is a remake "in the loosest sense of the word." Second, it's directed by Tobe Hooper. This man made one of the scariest films ever, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and followed it up with mostly dissapointing returns - POLTERGEIST and LIFEFORCE being notable exceptions. Hence, I didn't hear that Hooper's TOOLBOX might be pretty good.
has noted that THE TOOLBOX MURDERS has come under the scrutiny of the MPAA. This organization is a big fan of counterproductivity. Just look at the latest dictate banning Oscar screeners, a move with will allegedly hurt independents more than battle piracy. Hence, they have slapped TOOLBOX with an NC-17 rating. In the States, that means "no one under 17 admitted," period. No problem. Except many forward-minded TV networks and newspapers refuse to air advertisements for NC-17 films. Worse yet, many theatres refuse to carry the film, making distribution a tough sell and any chance of theatrical profit near impossible. It is said that the MPAA gave TOOLBOX the rating, not because of violence or gore - something the original was known for. Instead, it has been deemed "too intense." In horror terms, that means the film was judged so authentic, the board just found it too disturbing for an R.
Damn, could it be? Is Tobe Hooper back making great horror again?
THE TOOLBOX MURDERS will make it's premiere on November 1st, just four weeks after wrapping production. Although the film may undergo some minor cuts to earn an R-rating, the DVD is said to be the full uncut version.
