UNDERWORLD may have suffered the dreaded 50+% drop in it's second week at the box office, but that doesn't mean it isn't still raising hell. At 22 million, it is proving to be the little movie that could, and it should build an even stronger following once it completes it's theatrical run and hits DVD.

So, director Len Wiseman has talked at length with about the upcoming sequel and prequel to UNDERWORLD. Danny McBride will again write the screenplays and Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman will return. The article says:

"There's actually a sequel and a prequel that was mapped out when we sold this film. [Co-writer] Danny McBride and myself ? there was so much that we wanted to tell in this story that it was getting a bit confusing for us to map out all the history and the wars. We said, 'You know what? Let's map out a long story that would maybe span out three films and let's then be able to tell our film in the middle.' But we had to kind of map out the whole thing to get to the point where we are now because it does have a lot of layers in it. But we do want to tell a lot of that back story and I'm obsessed with going back to the Dark Ages and showing the war when it was legions of werewolves fighting an army of vampires on horseback, invading their castle. I think that would be insane visuals! So that's a bit of what the sequel is. We are already in the deal for the sequel and the studio's incredibly excited about it. I think the 15 minutes [of the sequel] will be a prequel for the sequel, much like an INDIANA JONES & THE LAST CRUSADE type of situation."

Wiseman is also well aware of the potential for the multimedia extensions of UNDERWORLD.

"There's a comic book now. It's so strange for me because I've been a fan of these kinds of films and now that I can make one and all of a sudden, there are comic books, novels, action figures, Halloween masks, and the whole bit. They are taking this thing as a potential franchise and the comic book of the film has been made. I would like to see them develop a comic book that goes back to the Dark Ages and do a Dark Ages series. I think that would be really cool. "

Okay, so Wiseman seems pretty obsessed with the Dark Ages thing. Also, we now know for sure that UNDERWORLD was actually part two of the trilogy (GINGER SNAPS is going a similar route). No word on when the cast and crew will re-unite for the sequel.
