[I 180w blacksun_lc01-231 I]Okay, I'm trying to get off the remake soapbox. I realize not all of them are terrible. I'm usually kinder than most would be. But when you look at a list from and see about two dozen of the suckers on the roster, with more being announced every week, it's easy to get disenchanted with the prospect of original productions.
Remakes aren't always horrible, although I do take issue with the remakes of several films that had a signature style that set them apart from everything else. One example would be SUSPIRIA. Another would be the films of Mario Bava.
The Bava remakes were announced last year. Thankfully, nothing much has been heard since. Hey, I was content to let it blow over, to let the project dissapear along with whoever cleared it. But I'm afraid they've got some big guns now.
Gale Anne Hurd has had a hand in a number of horror and sci-fi projects. Among them the upcoming PUNISHER film, ARMAGEDDON and James Cameron's ALIENS, THE ABYSS and the TERMINATOR movies (she used to be married to Cameron). On the horror front, she's had a part in TREMORS, CAST A DEADLY SPELL and it's sequel WITCH HUNT, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, THE RELIC, VIRUS and an upcoming ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN I can't find any info on.
Well, Gale Anne Hurd has put her money behind the proposed Mario Bava remakes - all thirteen of them! Yes, you can plan to see remakes of the films that make up the most notorious films of Bava's filmography:
BARON BLOOD
BLACK SABBATH
BLACK SUNDAY
FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON
FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT
HOUSE OF EXORCISM
KIDNAPPED (a.k.a. RABID DOGS)
KILL BABY KILL
KNIVES OF THE AVENGER
LISA AND THE DEVIL
ROY COLT & WINCHESTER JACK
THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE (a.k.a. BAY OF BLOOD)
, who initially broke the story, mentions how strange it is that LISA AND THE DEVIL and HOUSE OF EXORCISM are both on the list, "since they're essentially the same film." True, in fact the extra footage added to make LISA the retitled HOUSE OF EXORCISM was the brainchild of producer Alfredo Leone. And that wasn't met with rousing applause either. I think we will not see all of these made into films. I mean, is there really going to be a demand to see new versions of the sex comedy FIVE TIMES THAT NIGHT, or the western ROY COLT & WINCHESTER JACK, or how about the medieval version of HONDO called KNIVES OF THE AVENGER? No, we won't see them all. But we'll probably see a few.
Read for the full skinny. No news on what films are first on the list or who else will be involved in the production.
