A few months ago, when Stephen Biro was finally , Video Mayhem of Florida, he had his eye on the future. He was closing down to give higher priority to his new DVD company, Unearthed Films. And man, has he ever been busy. GUINEA PIG, JUNK, EVIL DEAD TRAP 2 and still more releases to come in 2003.
He told me of a number of projects he had in the works and swore me to secrecy. I haven't said word one about them and I still won't for the stuff that still might be on the bubble. But according to , it looks like a number of the projects he was talking about have finally happened. Here is a hometown boy who's made good, and we're all going to be reaping the benefits, horror fans.
Unearthed Films has entered the production realm, financing a whopping ten upcoming horror films. Many of these films are welcome returns for genre favorites. Along with business partner Paul White (formerly of Wild Street Productions), the films will be budgeted at 1 million clams each, pretty good for a horror upstart.
One of the projects Biro had told me about months ago was a sequel he had written to Brian Yuzna's fantastic horror film/social satire, SOCIETY. Looks like the sequel is finally happening with some primo talent. "Richard Stanley (HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL) is interested in directing, but we haven't finalized that yet. We're also talking with KNB about doing the effects." No word yet on whether Brian Yuzna will be participating in SOCIETY 2: BODY MODIFICATION.
Another script Biro has written sounds like the impression one gets from meeting Biro himself, enthusiastic, irreverent, a little crazy perhaps but very very interesting. DRUNKEN MASTER, VAMPIRE PRIEST has a description even more fun than it's title. "That one's going to be outrageous," Biro said. "I've got vampires, werewolves, zombies and a crossbreed called 'zompires' in it. We're going to try to push the envelope so far with that one - it's just going to be balls to the wall, so hopefully that will show people we mean business as far as the gore is concerned."
The group may also tackle a sequel to the Japanese zombie shocker, . Unearthed released the original on DVD in the States earlier this year. JUNK 2 would be directed by the original film's director, Atsushi Miroga.
Frank Henenlotter, who was also doing a film for Fango a while back (what happened with that one?) is set to do a film called LOVE IS HELL. It starts out sounding a bit like one of the GUINEA PIG films, HE NEVER DIES in that it involves a guy who can't seem to kill himself no matter how hard he tries. Then, it steers off into a whole new realm as he makes a deal with a succubus and, well... "I don't want to say much more than that," Biro said.
Other projects in the works for Unearthed Films include:
- UNSEEN, which may be directed by EVILSPEAK's Eric Weston
- FAITH involving "a community leader vs. a powerful Satanist." That will be helmed by Ray Brady (BOY MEETS GIRL).
- THE CLOWN, which has Satan disguised as the title character searching for a powerful necklace at a carnival. LEPRECHAUN's Mark Jones directs.
- VARMINT, a killer animal film from Matthew Bafaro.
- BROTHERHOOD OF THE DEAD, also directed by Bafaro, about zombies in World War II.
- SOMETHING WICKED, not to be confused with Ray Bradbury's short story with the longer title. "It's about a demon summoned in the 15th century that stalks the family of a countess who first raised him from the underworld," the says. Directed by Allen Plone (PHANTOM OF THE RITZ).
- SCARED YET?, described as "ANIMAL HOUSE meets SCREAM" and directed by Paul Williams.
And remember, Unearthed likely has other things on their plate, including future DVD releases. So remember to keep a close eye on this group. This upcoming slate of films sounds like it offers loads of variety to keep us satisfied.
