Remember a few years ago when a film that continued/lampooned the CHILD'S PLAY films called BRIDE OF CHUCKY came out. Remember our surprise when it turned out it was *gasp* pretty good? Talk started almost immediately about the sequel, to be called SEED OF CHUCKY. Then... nothing. The project was muttered about but soon dead in the water.
One very old posting on the Dark Horizons site even suggested Universal was embarassed by CHUCKY's success and had quietly shuffled plans for a fifth installment away. I always had a hard time believing that one. Studios want to make money, and they don't care what it's with - why else would they continue to make Rob Scheider movies?
But Eli Roth, director of CABIN FEVER has good news. His film opened well, 8 million bucks for a teeny tiny horror film filled with psychological chills and obscure humor is nothing to sneeze at. Better yet, it has gotten at least two stalled projects moving again.
First up is SEED OF CHUCKY. Roth told , " I got a very nice phone call from Don Mancini, who said he loved CABIN FEVER and said our strong opening helped him get the new Chucky film off the ground." Roth continued, "He said between Ronny Yu, Victor Salva, and now CABIN FEVER, the financiers have kicked into high gear and he's now in prep... So even people who saw CABIN FEVER and fucking hated it should know that their dollars ultimately went to a good cause."
Personally, I thought it was great of Roth to acknowledge that his film wasn't solely to blame, although it did play a part. Shows an appreciation for his fellow artists, which he has a reputation for. So much so that Roth's Raw Nerve Productions (founded with EVIL DEAD's Scott Speigel and UPTOWN GIRLS' Boaz Yakin) are dedicated solely to keeping people scared. And their first big production should be even bigger news to longtime exploitation fans.
"It's official," Roth said, "the first Raw Nerve film will be "2001 MANIACS," directed by Tim Sullivan. That's right, the long-awaited sequel/remake of Herschel Gordon Lewis' gore classic. This film has had a rough ride, but will finally film in November with Robert Englund in the lead. "Tim's new draft is awesome, it's going to be a shitload of fun, with lots of blood, guts and nudity for the fans to enjoy. I will be on set for all the tit shots, just to make sure they're nice and sweaty!" With all due respect, does anyone else think Roth sounds just a little bit like our newest critic, ?)
Hey, Eli Roth is our friend. How can you argue with a mission statement like this? "Hopefully the fans will see these two concrete examples of why it's important to support each other, and know that I'm serious about doing everything I can to help save R rated sick as fuck horror."
Amen, brother.
