[I 160w michaelmyers I]While I'm thrilled at how much Horror Express has grown lately, has anyone else noticed some themes in the news we report? I truly believe that 2003 will go down as an incredible year for horror. But these topics come up again and again:
1. Remakes.
2. Productions in trouble.
3. Questionable moves by major studios.
Well, get ready for an Unholy Trinity of all three. Dimension has lost what little scruples they had and has the story.
It seems that rather than go the sequel route for the inevitable HALLOWEEN IX, they are planning a remake of the original. Yes, a remake of HALLOWEEN. They are reportedly trying to approach John Carpenter himself with the prospect of writing and directing a remake to his indie smash of 1978. As the article states, "They ) was the worst yet, starting from scratch yet again by getting Jamie Lee out of the way in order to focus on a group of hot young stars with an internet slant that was simply pathetic. Now, they want to start from scratch yet again.
Guys, maybe this is a clue. We need something new. Rather than just trample on the franchise over and over again, create your own slasher icon. We've had Michael, Freddy and Jason for a long time, and they're great. But we haven't had any new blood (so to speak) for a long time. Think about what you could do with this. That's right, a new slasher icon, wholly owned by Dimension for the 21st century. You could do whatever you want to with him/her/it and not have to answer as many embarassing questions form longtime fans. Sounds tempting, doesn't it? God, I hope so.
But would John Carpenter do this? Hard to say. I just reviewed a biography/interview of the man for and he doesn't like the way the series has gone over the years. Likewise, it seems he would be loathe to revisit something that's been done to death. But then again, ESCAPE FROM L.A. was as much a remake as a sequel to the original. Also, the financial and critical failure of GHOSTS OF MARS (which I still love and the rest of you can live with it) may have hurt him more than we thought. According to the same Creature Corner article, he is currently peddling an update of THE FOG (which he wasn't entirely pleased with) with Debra Hill where the ghosts of slain lepers would be replaced by the ghosts of gang members.
In the meantime, the great website has a contest up which could place you in the next HALLOWEEN movie... whatever shape that may take.
