I don't know how many people have heard of "Ichi the Killer", Japan's latest splatterfest, but ever since I saw a review of it in Kerrang, a European rock magazine, I've been enthralled with the idea of the movie. Impressionable and psychotic, Ichi is a violent man haunted by his past. Controlled by Jinjii, a former Yakuza (gangster) lackey, he begins his murderous rampage through the ranks of the Yakuza organization in Shibuja. He is hunted by a deranged yakuza, who's name I can't completely remember, with a penchant for S&M and bizarre piercings (he has slashed his cheeks to the corners of his mouth and had them pierced). That's the basic plot behind this deranged, hyper-gory tale from the director of "Audition". You can check the flick out at www.ichithekiller.net, which has character profiles and a trailer. Anyway, I've been searching all over for the American release date, but have yet to find it. It's supposed to be released as a 2-disk set from Media Blasters, but I don't know much beyond that. Could you help me out?

Man oh man, ICHI THE KILLER is just awesome. Other than AUDITION (which I like more for personal reasons), I think it's TAKASHI MIIKE's best movie to date.

As for the MEDIA BLASTER / TOKYO SHOCK region 1 DVD release, I think it's slated for a November date. And there's two versions that will be available. You can find it at the AMAZON link below:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...product-details (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CABGW/qid=1064156213/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-8090674-6067101?v=glance&s=dvd#product-details)

But if you can't wait until then and you have an "all region" DVD player then I would suggest you purchase this version through the DVDASIAN link below:

http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/1...tml?id=LweKCqUY (http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/14836.html?id=LweKCqUY)

This is the DVD that I currently own and I can't say anthing bad about it at all.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

I have the R1 SE on preorder. :D

I'm really looking forward to this...it will be the 6th Miike film I've seen after

Audition
Fudoh
Dead or Alive
Visitor Q
City of Lost Souls

so far I like them all...very much!

For me, my MIIKE favs break down like this...

1. Audition (his BEST work so far in my opinion)
2. Ichi The Killer
3. Dead Or Alive (I haven't seen the two sequels yet)
4. Fudoh (I haven't seen the sequel to this one either)

I didn't really care for VISITOR Q even though it was extremely nasty. It just didn't "DO" what I wanted it to "DO" for me for some reason. And I haven't seen HAPPINESS OF THE KARAKURIS yet which appears to be a dark comedy with claymation and singing (!).

But I've recently picked up GOZU and SHOUJO MAHN NEXT on DVD off of EBAY.

As you probably already know, GOZU is the first (and hopefully last) part of the TAKASHI MIIKE YAKUZA HORROR THEATRE series. And I just gotta say after watching it, that GOZU blew! It was the longest, slowest, most aimless flick I've ever seen. Shame on you, MIIKE!

Why, you ask?!

GOZU meandered along for what seemed like eight hours even though the actual flick clocks in at about two hours. And every time you thought you might get alittle pay off with some sicko sleaze, it would fool ya and plod on even longer. However, GOZU did bring back the "breast milkings" which you'll fondly remember from VISITOR Q. And there's a large soup ladle to the rectum scene that's just sooo ridiculous, it's almost funny. And how could I forget, the "birthing"?! Well, that's probably the ONLY thing worth seeing in GOZU, in my opinion. I won't even go into the story because I don't feel like wasting my time punching away on the keyboard. It's just not worth it.

All in all, I was VERY disappointed in GOZU especially since it was hugely hyped as his next "big thing" since the simply awesome ICHI THE KILLER. My advice, for what it's worth, is to leave GOZU alone but deep down, you know you're gonna have to check it out for yourself just to be sure. But you've been warned. Don't expect too much from GOZU.

As for SHOUJO MAHN NEXT, I've only watched the trailer so far but it looks like a Japanese BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. I know it was a 2-part filmed-for-television program presented in widescreen. It appears to be about a gaggle of vampire schoolgirls (!) who like to fight and jump around the screen. Mindless fun I suppose but it couldn't be any worse than GOZU.

A few other MIIKE films (old and new) I'm looking forward to are...

1. FULL METAL YAKUZA (a ROBOCOP wanna-be)
2. THE BIRD PEOPLE OF CHINA
3. VIOLENT FIRE (starring MIIKE mainstay, RIKI TAKEUCHI)

Well, when you get finished with the first ICHI THE KILLER, start the hunt for the new "prequel". Here's some info I dug up on it...

"LIVE ACTION PREQUEL TO MIIKE'S ICHI THE KILLER!!!

http://cinemabizarre.blogspot.com/ichi%20dvd.jpg

1-ICHI is directed by Masato Tanno and starring Masatoshi Nagase, Nao Omori, TEAH, and Kôji Chihara.

Here's the description:
"Based on the original manga, and taking place in an alternate world separate from the feature film and the anime, 1-Ichi is much more true to the original manga. Tanno decided to ignore Miike's Ichi and concentrate on creating his own. This film was created by many of the same crew that worked on the theatrical Ichi."

"Nao Omori stars in this new film and reprises his role as Ichi. TEAH plays the best fighter in school, Mr. Dai, who believes Ichi is laughing at him when he fights. Ichi follows him to watch his fights but he takes pleasure in watching the violence, not laughing at Mr. Dai. Ichi is often bullied and even taunted by little kids in his karate class. He bottles up all his anger and refuses to fight or defend himself or others that need his help. Kôji Chihara plays the transfer student who becomes Ichi's nemesis in the film. The transfer student has much greater fighting ability and even Mr. Dai has a hard time with him. It's up to Ichi to battle the transfer student and let loose all of his inhibitions about fighting and become Ichi the Killer."

Awesome film! You must see 'the happiness...' it absolutely blew me away! An insane mix of genres, and forms (claymation, etc.). It is a must see. Absolutely hillarious... it managed to make me cry with laughter, and at a more serious part (which hasnt happened for a while). Though I cant say I could realy pick favourates, I think it might be the Miike film I would reccomend to people first because it is just so breathtaking. The DVD (well, the tartan DVD anyway) is amazing, great quality and with a great array of features (which is a suprise considering the lack of much in the way of extras on tartans releases of his other films).

I havent got Ichi yet. Im proberly going to get an uncut import sometime, but I have been told that the difference between cut and uncut isnt worth too much effort in getting the uncut, and the R2 here in the UK comes with 2 discs and a great amount of extras.

Im interested in the anime, I might pick it up in the future, but Im not rushing out to get it on its release.

Yeah, it's getting to be about that time to pick up my HAPPINESS DVD. I think I'll get that along with the original Korean movie it was based on, QUIET FAMILY which is new to DVD.
