I was initially loathe to report on yet another remake. But hey, it's news, right? Time to stop putting it off and history shows this one isn't such a bad one.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS is set to get the remake treatment all over again from Warner Bros. Seeing the box office success of their remake, THE RING, the studio has handed the production off to producers Roy Lee and Doug Davidson. It will focus on a female lead in a small town setting.

No one has been selected to write the script yet. But speculates that the honor could go to Victor Salva (JEEPERS CREEPERS 1-2). Apparantly, this was mentioned at the convention in London. The Salva rumor has not been confirmed.

This remake wouldn't be too bad actually. BODY SNATCHERS has held up surprisingly well throughout the ages. In the fifties, Don Seigel's classic was a veiled metaphor for the Red Scare. In the 1970s, Phillip Kauffman's remake addressed a nation that was tiring of a decade of decadence and getting ready to settle into the bland prosperity of the eighties. Abel Ferrara's remake in the 1990s set the events within the confines of an Army base, where conformity can be a soldier's best friend. Who knows what paralells this one will draw, if any?

The basis of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS was the novel by Jack Finney, which was "inspired" by the novel THE PUPPET MASTERS by Robert A. Heinlein.

On the surface this is great news for me. I absolutely adore the '78 version. And the original is still a very good film.

The reason I'm not that enthused is two-fold.
One the 90's version delivered little in my opinion. It was nothing but a pale shadow of the previous versions.
Two they seem to be using that as the model for the remake. Bad idea.

Female Lead? I don't know. It's nothing that will stop the film being good, I just associate it with Donald Sutherland and Kevin McCarty too much.

I also wouldn't be suprised if they went a little more down the action route. I don't think that would ruin it, but it obviously isn't what the movie is about.

Mixed blessings on this one. I won't even begin to make my mind up until I here whose going to be involved in it.
