What's the name of this movie?

Please help me identify this movie - think it was black & white - had a man and his wife and a second man - never seen monster down water well - they send food down well - via a wrecker - bring up gold - with a note (taste like chicken) - several times - then the first man goes down well - when wrecker pulls the cable back up - no man - but lots of gold - and of course a note (taste like chicken)
