I think everyone was expecting Dreamworks' American remake of RINGU to make lots of money, just as every horror fan was expecting the remake to suck. Well, we 'aint Nostradamus people. THE RING made much more than was even expected of it, landing Gore Verbinski a hot-ticket status that was cemented with PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN. Likewise, opinions on the remake seem to be split. Although I still greatly prefer the original, even I need to go back and watch the spruced-up version again.

Now, word is beginning to spread about the sequel. Naomi Watts (who also starred in TANK GIRL and MULHOLLAND DRIVE before her big break) told that she will indeed return for the sequel.

THE RING 2 is expected to begin filming early next year. Although the original stayed pretty close to the original at the end, adding in a touch more ambiguity, THE RING 2 will be it's own film. It will not follow the Japanese RING trilogy. The film is being described as both a prequel and a sequel - half the film featuring events that lead up to THE RING and the other half providing an exciting climax to the story.

Gore Verbinski is also expected to return to helm the sequel according to . Wes Craven and Sam Mendes had been previously mentioned as possible replacements. Dreamworks is projecting a November 2004 release date, but that could change depending on when filming is set to begin.

Naomi Watts was featured in such films as FLIRTING, WIDE SARGASSO SEA and TANK GIRL before getting her big break with MULHOLLAND DRIVE and then THE RING. She can next be seen in LE DIVORCE (which is Merchant-Ivory, so I know I won't be seeing it), 21 GRAMS, I HEART HUCKABEESWE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON and the horror thriller STAY before heading off for the RING sequel. Sheesh, someone's keeping busy.

How quickly they forget.

That's actually a good thing in my opinion because I absolutely hated the original THE RING 2.
