You know things are getting iffy when you start cheering the fact that a horror project ISN'T getting made.
reports that Wes Craven's recent dealings with former best buds, Dimension Films have hit yet another snag. The Miramax subsidiary, which in turn is owned by Disney, is pulling the plug on Craven's proposed remake of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Japanese horror smash, KAIRO (a.k.a. PULSE).
The official reason seems to be that PULSE was deemed too similar to the American remake of THE RING. The plot consists of a student who discovers a link to the world of the supernatural through the Internet. KAIRO (the American remake would have gone under the PULSE title) was a huge hit in Japan, and Kurosawa is being hailed as a genius based on it's success.
"I thought it was a brilliant movie," Craven told , "The way the ghosts were used. It's like nothing that's ever been done before." So one could ask why he felt the need to remake it? Ah well, never mind. The project is not happening. No word on whether this will signal a U.S. release of Kurosawa's original.
This is the first of a few problems Craven has had with Dimension. It follows the failure of reason "Wes Craven Presents" films such as THEY. And the new werewolf film CURSED has just gotten back on track, after having even more troubles than . Now, a new ending has been shot and things look like they are coming together.
But Craven has to be smarting from the loss of what was to be his next project after CURSED. "We were all terribly excited about that film and we had the rug pulled out from under us," Craven said. He lamented later on, "It's extremely frustrating not to be able to do it."
