I recently had the good forturn to find Japanes all-region copies of the early 70's Toho vamp films Lake of Dracula and Evil of Dracula.
I remembered Lake from seeing it broadcast here in the 80's, and I thought it was a well crafted, moody piece of gothic horror. Sure, it had a very European Dracula in the middle of Japan, but other than that conceit, it was effective in maintian an atmosphere of dread and growing apprehension, particularly in how the childhood meeting of Dracula would effect the main female character/ And a great painting too of the Eye of Drac floating over a lake, worthy of Night Gallery.
Most online reviews seemed to attempt to trip over themselves trying to find new ways to say it was horrible, and I wondered if the classy folk here thought of it as possessing some strong qualities, or if it was just a piece of cheese.
