Good news for fans of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN and DEATH. It appears as though that most unlikely of comics adaptations has seen some major forward progress in recent months.
Gaiman will write and probably direct DEATHL THE HIGH COST OF LIVING. The film will be based on his celebrated graphic novel of the same name, a spin-off of his SANDMAN series.
In Gaiman's world, Death takes the guise of a spunky goth Tori Amos-like girl who takes a suicidal teenager under her wing by revealing the secrets of the universe. But Death has her own demons as well, namely Mad Hettie who threatens to kill Death's friend unless she helps her find her heart. Add to this Death's newfound humanity and how she deals with her new station and mortality and you've got one of the most exciting projects to come by in quite some time.
While discussing THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, producer Don Murphy told that Warner Bros. has given the DEATH project a greenlight. An announcement at San Diego's ComicCon should be forthcoming. The film's progress is conditional on Gaiman being in the director's chair. Whoo-hoo! Stick to your guns, I say.
If everything goes according to plan, expect DEATH: THE HIGH COST OF LIVING to go before cameras this year or early next year.
