[I 160w hellnight I]Truthfully, double feature discs existed before MGM started going that route. Public domain companies continue to churn out cheap product. But when MGM started releasing their Midnight Movies line in double feature packages, complete with fine prints that actually showed respect for the fans, it was a big success.

So, Anchor Bay seems to be taking notice in repackaging some of it's back catalogue and releasing double feature discs, slightly different than the two packs they released for the Argento and Fulci films.

The DVDs, to be released on August 5th in the U.S., include the following:

/MACABRE - two cult classics by Lamberto Bava

CIRCUS OF HORRORS/THEATRE OF DEATH - a funhouse double starring Christopher Lee

ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK/TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 - horror comedies from the New World line. Almost ashamed to say I'll buying this one. Almost.

FADE TO BLACK/ - two overlooked horror films from the early 1980s

HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD/RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR - a Bruno Mattei double. Because there's a little masochist in all of us.

THE INITIATION/MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL MASSACRE - I admit I haven't seen these.

MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD/CANNIBAL MAN - Ooooh, nice gooey double here. MOUNTAIN is the uncut version of SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD with the controversial added footage.

POSSESSION/SHOCK - What a combo! Surreal Sam Neil/Isabel Adjani film and the last film from the great Mario Bava.

RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES/RETURN TO HORROR HIGH - Two films from New World that have "return" in the title. A true concept release.

SOCIETY/SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION - Another great pair. Brian Yuzna's haunting horror satire and Tobe Hooper's imperfect but underrated film.

August is also the month MGM releases their latest batch of Midnight Movies and Blue Underground unleashes more goodies. August is every North American horror fan goes broke.

Yeah...pretty cool. I don't like "flippers" from a tactile and aesthetic point of view but they are a hell of a value.

I'll probably pick up some of the AB titles that didn't quite sell me as higher priced, single movie discs.
