[I 140h news-155 I]Ryuhei Kitamura has been a busy boy. He has a new film, ALIVE coming out and you can see the Quicktime trailer . Also, he has a plum deal for an upcoming film with Miramax, which we hope the mouse won't sick it's teeth into.

But if that is not enough, he is revisiting old territory, planning a sequel to VERSUS, but not before revisiting the original.

According to and , Kitamura is planning what he calls an "alternate cut" of his gangsters and samurai vs. zombies flick. I got a sense of loathing when I heard this, but not to fear. With theatrical and director's cuts already heading to DVD in the U.S., he is not pulling a George Lucas here. KFC says, "The current version of VERSUS is indeed the way the director intended it to be, 1.5 (the alternate cut) is merely an alternate cut of the film because he loves playing around with that stuff."

So what can we expect? They are doing lots of reshoots this summer. Apparantly quite a bit. The budget for this alternate cut is bigger than the budget for the entire original film! KFC says, "It includes a new beginning, a new ending, a new showdown and a lot more zombie gunfight scenes - some of the talky parts will be gone and it will feature a new soundtrack as well." VERSUS had talky parts? Oooo-kaaay....

The VERSUS sequel will follow in 2004. This is good stuff, folks. It's a film that really deserves to be known as a cult classic.

As for the biiiig Region 1 DVD release, we reported on that back . By click on the link, you can learn about the three separate versions coming to the U.S. from Media Blasters, including the big 2-disc set. Enjoy!

I don't think the upcoming R1 VERSUS DVD release will contain any new "re-shoots" that you've reported. We'll have to wait for that second DVD to come along later.
