Aaah, Cannes. So exotic, so incredible, so unlikely I'll be going anytime soon. Still, some interesting genre tidbits have been popping up around the festival, according to .
For one, the forever-slumming Tobe Hooper is confirmed for a remake of THE TOOLBOX MURDERS. What does this mean for the back-to-back RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD sequels Hooper was to direct? Who knows? Also in the works is quite possibly the worst idea for a vampire film I've ever heard. DRACULA 3000 will involve the evil count stalking his victims on... a spaceship. It's made to sound like ALIEN blended with the classic Stoker tale, but I'm thinking JASON X. This is a scenario that even made the Leprechaun look more foolish than he already did.
But the biggest news is this: the new project by Bruno Mattei! People have a love-hate relationship with Mattei. The man has been incredibly arrogant in interviews and has made what many claim are the worst Italian horror films. Some of the notable films to his credit are HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD, RATS: NIGHTS OF TERROR and THE OTHER HELL. Personally, I find his films ridiculous but fun. They're usually not supposed to be funny, they just are (meaning that he has at least one thing in common with Anna Nicole-Smith).
Mattei's project is of note for the long-dead genre it may ressurrect. The title says it all: MONDO CANNIBALE! Hey, wait a minute. That title sounds familiar. And it should. It was the original title of Ruggero Deodato's LAST CANNIBAL WORLD (a.k.a. JUNGLE HOLOCAUST). It was also used as a title for the original cannibal film, DEEP RIVER SAVAGES (a.k.a. MAN FROM DEEP RIVER) and Jess Franco's maligned SEXO CANNIBAL (a.k.a. WHITE CANNIBAL QUEEN). Will it be a celebration or another rip-off? Only time will tell.
But since WRONG TURN is also hitting screens, are we being prepared for something unpresedented? If 2003 is , is 2004 to be the Year of the Cannibal?
