[I 160w canh_disc I]I've been sitting on this one for a couple days, since no one seems to be able to get the concrete information we need. But since everyone else is coming along with their stories, we may as well repeat that it looks like a new CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST Special Edition DVD is coming.
The widescreen transfer on this disc comes from the film's original negative, supervised by Ruggero Deodato himself. Deodato also shows up for a commentary with critics Giona Nazzaro and Antonio Tentori. The disc will also carry a documentary - not a slap-dash featurette - called INTO THE JUNGLE: THE MAKING OF CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. That sucker runs over an hour itself. A stills gallery is also included in this simple yet eye-grabbing design. The disc is expected to hit the stands on June 15, 2003.
But where? That's the thing. The disc is being released by Alan Young Pictures. And I think I speak for most people when I say, "Who the hell is Alan Young Pictures?" As we all know, Grindhouse was working on a NTSC Region 1 release for several years and most of us had given up hope of ever seeing it. If you're like me, you caved an bought the EI disc - not a great work but uncut and the only one going for the States. The packaging has some Italian language stuff on it, but that could be just to stress the film's notorious roots for all we know.
Remarkably, none of the many articles published on this managed to figure out where this would be released. Please, if anyone has any information on this, let us know and we'll keep you posted.
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is the notorious film which follows a professor tracking down a group of documentary filmmakers who went into the jungle to cover the indigenous people there. Once their fate is learned, the rest of the film reconstructs how their arrogance and cruelty sealed their fate. It's a disturbing horror film that doubles as a searing indictment of the media, long before Hollwyood caught on. The story template was also adapted in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.
We've been burned before on CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, but the promise of a director-supervised Special Edition is enough to make horror fan's heart soar.
So is it real? Is it a hoax? Is it only in Swahili? Only time will tell. Why not, we've waited this long...
