[I 160w miike I]The good news is Takashi Miike is prepping what could be his best horror film. The bad news is it's probably Miike's last horror film.

According to , Miike's new untitled film involves a schoolgirl investigating the death of her friend, finding that it all began with a voicemail message.

Some of the filming took place in an allegedly haunted hospital. The cast and crew would feel a tugging behind them and find nothing there.

Miike promises this will be his most intense horror film to date. Says , "He's orchestrated a plethora of ideas to scare the shit out of the audience." The film will hit Japanese theatres in January 2004.

Miike is without a doubt the most exciting filmmaker to come around in some time, so news of his departure from the genre is surprising. An amazingly prolific artist, Miike has directed 55 films since 1991! Some notable films include AUDITION, the DEAD OR ALIVE trilogy, FUDOH, ICHI THE KILLER, VISITOR Q and HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS, just to name a few. The article does not specify what other genres Miike will explore.

Hmmmm....say it ain't so.

Anyway the project sounds pretty cool so I'll look forward that. I'm also looking forward to dvds of Visitor Q, Fudoh and Dead or Alive to come in the mail soon. :)

VISITOR Q and FUDOH are some of the next discs on my "to buy" list, chuk. DEAD OR ALIVE is simply amazing. It opens with an amazing montage and the rest of the film just has a strange ambiance, ending in a chaotic finale that will have you blinking for hours. I have not yet seen the third film in the trilogy. I don't know if it's a popular view or not, but I actually thought DOA 2: BIRDS was a little better than the original.

Miike's an amazing filmmaker to be sure. I've only seen a handful of his films, but they've all been as different as night and day. But so far, they've all been great.

I watched Fudoh and Visitor Q over the last weekend.

Fudoh was really good. Funny, bloody and audacious as hell, but Visitor Q....??? WTF did I see? I thought nothing could shock me these days but damn if this didn't do it.

Miike is the man!

I'm sure whatever genre TAKASHI MIIKE works on (save for television movies), I'm sure to enjoy it.

My favs (in order) line up as such:

1. AUDITION (without a doubt, his BEST work to date)
2. ICHI THE KILLER (gangster flicks will NEVER be the same)
3. DEAD OR ALIVE (the GREATEST opening of ANY movie... EVER!)
4. FUDOH (my first exposure to actor RIKI TAKEUCHI)
5. CITY OF LOST SOULS (another quirky gangster flick)
6. VISITOR Q (I didn't "GET" the movie, but it sure was nasty!)

Next on my "BUY LIST" is GOZU (whenever someone starts bootlegging it), FULL METAL YAKUZA, THE BIRD PEOPLE OF CHINA, HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS, the rest of the DEAD OR ALIVE series, and FUDOH 2.
