FUCKING A! (http://www.twitchfilm.net/archives/002785.html)

Wow, it looks like a return to the Golden Age of Tsui Hark! Let's hope he pulls it off!
Anyone a here a Tsui Hark fan?

HELL YEAH! I've been an avid Hark fan for a pretty long time now. The man is a mad genius when it comes to cinema. Like most of you, I've been waiting for this film to be released, and now that the trailers are out, I'm even more excited to see this film. I'm actually drooling at the thought of being able to sit in a theatre and watching this film unfold. Plus, this is the last film that Lau Kar Leung will do, after this film, he will retire, so just that alone has already elevated the anticipation level for me.

As Vader would say, "Impressive, most impressive".

In case anyone hasn't seen this site, it's in English...

the movie look cool but why the hell would they cast leon lai as one of the main character. the guy doesn't even have one masculine bone in his body.

Back in the 90's, I would have agreed with you on casting Leon Lai as an action hero because back then; I thought he was pretty wussy, but after seeing him in Wong Kar Wai's FALLEN ANGELS and Johnny To's A HERO NEVER DIES, I have retracted my statement.

saw seven swords via a boot dvd. its a huge huge disappointment. the movie is crappy. the storyline is so stupid. there is zero character development. the fighting suck. probably one of the worst movie i've seen in a while. and i've seen a lot of crappy stuff.

That's a shame to hear. The trailer looked so good.

I read this over at MONKEY PEACHES...

The storytelling suffers from being cut but a DVD, with the original cut, has been promised, and more encouragingly, a series of sequels will be developed to continue the story. Go check this one out when it becomes available to you and while watching it, keep something in mind – this is only the beginning of Seven Swords’ legend.
Maybe that's why you didn't like it?

the version i saw was 2hrs long. maybe the 4hrs version is better but i doubt it.

what's the point of making a series when the first one suck so bad.

my thoughts on the movie.

storyline:

this movie has none! seven swords come down from the mountain, kill bad guy, done. with a plot like that it's amazing how tsui hark can drag the movie on for 2 hrs. whatever happen in between("little stories") is some of the lamest, cliche stuff you'll ever see.

characters:

other than knowing the name of the characters in the movie, you'll know nothing else about them. there is zero character development. the movie is named "seven swords", the least you can do is tell us a little about each sword or the characters holding the sword. you'll get none of that. other than having different names, the swords dont even have any specialty. they're basically the same. two or three of the character holding the sword don't even have speaking line in the movie and they got like 8 minutes of screen time.

action:

there are about 3 action scenes in the movie and they get cut up so bad. they remind me of the michael bays movie where each frame last about 2-3 seconds. the fight start and you'll get a close up of a fist hitting a face or a foot kicking an ass (maybe i am exaggerating, but thats what it feels like). well thats what they get for casting leon le in a martial art movie. the last action scene with donie yen is pretty good though.

overall:

i guess they see the success of lord of the rings, the matrix, kill bill, and they want to do something like that. the movies mentioned are pretty decent, whereas this one they just throw out some nonesense crap and hope to make money. doesnt the story of seven warriors comming together to protect a village has been done before?

i just read the review on monkeypeaches and another one on aint-it-coolreview (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20963)

its funny how they both admit that the movies has no plot, no characterization, and action is mediocre at best, yet they still like the movie. wtf do they like about the movie?

bet you this is what the production team discuss when they sit down for a meeting. the wuxia genre has been doing well lately. movies that were released in series have made millions. put those two together, throw in a well known director and we got ourself a money making formula. we don't give a fuck if the movie is good or not, just put it on the big screen as soon as possible and collect our money. thats what they did and i guess it work because somehow people still find reasons to like this movie.

how can people just overlook all the problems and say that this movie serve its purpose by setting up for more movies to come. might as well make a 5 minutes movie where the good guys kill the bad guys and end by saying stay tune there are more to come. next movie we'll have the good guys kill more bad guys and if you're lucky we'll develop the characters and come up with a badass plot.

hong kong cinema has gone to shit. the whole movie industry is on the shoulder of The Twins.

Hey Methol,

You said you watched the 2 hour version right?! I heard that the one Tsui Hark is releasing in theaters is the 2 and 1/2 hour version, and that he was suppose to release the 4 hour version on dvd. I read somewhere recently that he might not release the 4 hour version on dvd anymore, and instead will release the 2 and 1/2 hour version on dvd instead.

I smell a "double dip" coming our way! Betcha, first we get the "theatrical cut" on DVD. Then just a few months later, wham, the longer "director's cut" hits DVD.
